How much it will cost will depend on where you live. Around here it costs about $5000 CAD.

When my basset girl had back surgery, afterwards I had to walk her with her hind end in a sling, so her legs were free to move if she wanted to, but they didn't have to support her weight. I also had to do range of motion exercises with her legs. I found that she was able to run before she could walk, and she could walk before she could stand still. It took a while, but eventually she recovered enough to get around fine, although she always walked like she was coming home from a bar. :-)

If you are not able to afford the surgery, don't give up on him too quickly. I've known a number of dogs that recovered, even when the vets said they would never walk again without surgery. My girl who had the surgery put her back out again a couple of years later, I couldn't afford the surgery a second time. Since she was not in pain and had control of her bladder and bowels I took her home and looked into getting her a cart. In the meantime I did her physiotherapy and sling walking and gave her a homeopathic remedy (don't know if the homeopathic helped but it couldn't hurt). Well, I never had to buy the cart because six weeks after I was told she would never walk again she was up and walking.

Even if he never does walk again, most dogs are quite happy with a "doggy wheelchair". I've known a few dogs in carts and they zoom around like nothing is wrong.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

First of all your vet should be able to tell if it is a slipped disc or a fracture by X-Rays. I have had several Dachshunds thru the years that have had back problems, two of them I was able to get back up and walking on my own. And one of them has gone down several times......I just formed my own type of therapy on them. However in some instances surgery is necessary and recovery time can be slow. The cost will not be cheap for the surgery. What kind of dog is it?

my weiner dog had the same problem he was fine one moment the next his back legs were dragging behind hiim i rushed him to the vet and he said thats what it was... thank goodness in my case the meds worked and now i can tell when he is about to have a flair up and i start his meds however the vet did say that maybe one day it will happen again and then the only way to go will be to either due surgery or put him to sleep that is tough but now i would have to say i awould put him down because he is 10 and i cant afford that exp surgery for it to maybe work maybe not... good luck to you my heart goes out to you ... as for the cost im not sure about where you are or your vet but my vet said anywhere from 2000. to 5000 and no garentees...

Ask your veterinarian! He will be able to give you a detailed description of what the surgery will be, as well as after care....and the office will be able to give you an estimate since they'll need to know from the doctor what the surgery will entail. It'll probably be $1,000 or more, but again, that's dependant on a lot of things.

SO CALL YOUR VET!

This may sound strange but seek out a chiropractor. You need to ask if they use an activator. If the doctor knows what it is you can tell them your problem. You will be surprised who many may be able to help you. If you can get an x-ray from the Vet it will help. Good Luck

Also get a negative draw magnet and put it under the dogs bed. It will relieve pain and aid in circulation to the area.

If the bleeding has stopped, then leave it alone, let the body heal itself. But if you want to cleanse the area, just use an antibiotic wash or you soak his paw in a lukewarm water and Epsom salts for about 15-20 minutes. This will help reduce pain and draw out any bacteria. As for the Peroxide, if you are going to use it, only use it Once. It will start to eat away at the skin causing more raw and tender areas. Otherwise, it will help and the paw may be tender for a while.

before ym dog responded to the steroids after her injury, the surgery was looking to be about 4 grand. We still ended up spending about two on her recovery, but it was worth every penny. Good luck!

Ask your vet and seek a second opinion. We have not seen your dog, treated your dog, or diagnosed your dog, so your best resource will be talking with a vet directly about this.
