I'm in the process of authoring a paper for class, and need immediate assistance. If somebody could explain the ANS. in detail that would be wonderful. I need to know if during death the ANS works, and what happens when our boides undergo such excrutiating amounts of pain we pass out, correct? Is this due to the ANS reaction? So, basically, am I right when I say that our bodies can undergo the an extensive amount of pain, but when the pain crosses the threshold of what were are capable of enduring then our boides enter into an involuntary state correct? Such as a person in acar accident who is in such immense pain that he passes out--Is this due to the ANS, and if so can you tell me how it workks? Also, a greater assistance would be a website I can attain all this information from.

THANKS

The autonomic nervous system is responsible for the involuntary functions of your body, such as breathing and organ functions like digestion. It has nothing to do with pain perception or reaction, that is a function of your brain, which interprets signals from the peripheral nerves as pain. However, passing out due to pain is somewhat of an autonomic function. This passing out is called a vasovagal reflex. If you are severely injured, and are losing a volume of blood, your body drops the blood pressure and enters a state of shock. In some people, this vasovagal reflex can be triggered due to the sight of blood, or needles or something which they are afraid of on a primal level. People can endure great amounts of pain without passing out, it's all a very individual thing.

The ANS, like the last person said, is responsible for breathing, heartrate, blood pressure, and organ function...but what they failed to mention is that when your body is under an enormous amount of stress the ANS completly takes over. It is like our animal instincts. Therefore when you get hurt or are about to be hurt your brain functions completly on instinct. So if your body just endured a lot of pain than the ANS sends your body into shock so that the pain itself doesn't kill you. This could cause you to pass out but not everybody would.
