Because, unfortunately, more people believe in the TV fictional vote than believe in effecting a change in the real world. Some are afraid if they vote for a person/proposition they are somehow responsible if they are wrong. It is easier to vote for a TV personality since it has no bearing on the quality of life one enjoys. It is doubly easier to complain about appointees and legislation if you have chosen to not actually exercise your right to vote.

Because voting for the next American Idol doesn't take any brains like voting in an election should. It's pure mindless entertainment (which I'm not criticizing).

You don't have to take the time to read about any issues and who represents what.

You can stay inside where it's nice & warm, you don't have to get dressed & go outside, you can order in & enjoy a pizza while watching American Idol.

They didn't. More *people* voted in the election yesterday than voted in American Idol balloting.

However, there were more *votes* cast for American Idol, which is what I think you're thinking of.

It's important to remember that distinction, as American Idol lets (indeed encourages) people to vote multiple times, while the US gov't does not (at least not per position per election).

You can vote as often as you wish for Idol, no age restrictions, no registration, and you can vote 3 different ways w/o having to leave the house.

Thankfully the US does not allow 15 year olds to obsessively vote for someone that is cute for hours on end. LOL

I would say Guy Norman Cognito stole my answer. But he said it better than I would have. More votes in American Idle does not mean more voters.
