My sister and I are looking to go up for my birthday. I would like to know where the cheaper places are in the upper east side area, maybe soho. Also tell me about your worst/best stays up there. Thanks for your time. Also if you live there what are good things to do? Funniest thing that has also happened to you while in city easy points.

Here is a link to hotels in the city under $200, one of which is on the Upper East Side:

I live on the Upper East Side, and it is a great area, with lots of shops and restaurants. It is very clean and very safe!! It is easy to get downtown to the tourist attractions. There are not that many hotels, aside from some of the fancier places over on Madison/Fifth Avenues. It is a very residential area, except for right around East 86th Street, which has lots of big stores.

The nice thing about the Upper East Side is that you are really close to Central Park, and not just the SouthEast corner of the park that most visitors see. There are beautiful gardens up past 90th Street! Also, Museum Mile is on 5th Avenue between 79th and 100th Street and you can go to the Whitney, the Guggenheim, the Met, Cooper Hewitt, Museum of the City of New York and more!

I would say stay with your cousin who lives in Queens. You will save a fortune by staying at your cousin's house. Queens is close enough to Manhattan to go there everyday by pubic transportation. With a $29.00 weekly unlimited metro card you can travel back and forth everyday. Depending on what part of Queens it will take less than an hour to get into Midtown Manhattan every day. From the areas of Bayside, Fresh Meadows, Little Neck, Bellerose, Queens Village it will take almost an hour by bus and subway. . These are some of the areas of Eastern Queens which is the farthest from Manhattan. If your cousin lives closer to Manhattan all the better, Also you will have people to talk with you each night and you can tell them of your sightseeing excursions in Manhattan. This will be the best way for you to save money which you can use for sightseeing and purchasing souvenirs. As far as the walking to your hotel in the evening you can walk to the subway stop and catch the train to Queens. It is not such a big deal to walk to your hotel and have to spend so much money for that. Also as I said you will enjoy the evenings at your cousins house more and have people to talk to about your adventures and your thoughts about New York. I say it is better to stay with your cousin at their house especially since Queens is so close to Manhattan and with the unlimited metro card you can use the bus and subway trains as often as you want to for $29.00 for 7 days. Even if you stay less than 7 days it is still a super bargain as the pay-per-fare is $2.25 each time you get on the subway train. Welcome to New York and enjoy your vacation here.

New York City is in the midst of a bed bug epidemic right now. Be very careful when you choose a place to stay. Many upscale hotels and apartment buildings have had infestations as well as inexpensive ones. When you think you've found a place to stay, make sure you do some online investigating to see if they've had any reports of bed bugs.

You don't want the cheaper places to stay. Safety is important, spend more money for comfort and safety.
