We are putting tile down in our entry way, kitchen, pantry and laundry room. There are two pocket doors, one between the entry way and kitchen and one between the dining room and kitchen.

There should be a metal track at the top of the doorway that the door is suspended on. Close the door with one person on each side, and lift the wheels out of the track and pull the door out.

Remove A Pocket Door

If it's a pocket door, and not a sliding door, then there would not be any tracks on the floor. A true pocket door is supported and tracked inside the wall. If that's the case, then it is very difficult to remove. You would have create an opening in the wall to remove the door. If you're putting in tile, more than likely, your pocket doors are not high enough above the floor to clear the thickness of the new tile. If you want to completely remove the pocket doors, I recommend you opening up the wall, remove the door, and install extra support studs and insulation inside the wall (your wall is hollow otherwise to make room for the door). This will strengthen the walls and give extra noise reduction in the rooms. Then you can either install a swinging door or a folding door. Keep in mind that your new wall would need to be drywalled, taped, textured (if any, to match the rest of the wall), primed, and painted.

pocket doors are trickey. usually the door jamb on the pocket side of the opening has a stop nailed to the jamb. this is usually 3/8 x 1 or 1/1/2 and runs from the floor to the top of the door jamb. there are two. look up at the track above the door and see which side of the track is open. remove the stop opposite this side. you might have to remove the stop on the top jamb if it has one. then pull the door to you and lift it at the same time, about 30 degrees. the rollers will come off the track and the door can be removed. check the rollers for wear. also look at the adjustment for the rollers.it usually takes a special wrench. you can usually get one at home depot with a new roller package
