It is also used for prevention of migraines and other headaches. Many meds are used for other purposes than what they were originally develped for. Depakote just happens to be one of many meds that works well for some to help prevent headaches. My husband has used several different meds for headache prevention and currently uses a common heart/blood pressure medicine to help with his headaches and control his blood pressure.

Have you ever gone to a doctor and NOT gotten a prescription?

I'm so tired of doctors prescribing quick fixes for everyone and not CURING the problem.

Did the doctor ask her about her lifestyle? eating habits that may be contributing to her headaches? Stress, hormones?

Headaches are difficult to diagnose the cause, but it is your body telling you something is out of whack.
She needs to get a second opinion if her health really matters to her. The side effects, current and future, are incredibly high.

I believe it's job security for doctors NOT to cure- only to take care of the symptoms.

Depakote is normally prescribed as a mood stabilizer for manic- depressive or bipolar individuals. However, it's also being used as anticonvulsants to prevent seizures, in epilepsy. Recently, it has been used for prevention of migraine headaches. Migraine Headache is characterized by intense, recurrent pain on one or both sides of the head, and usually are accompanied by one or more concurrent symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and an increased sensitivity to noise and/or bright light.

Treatment for migraine may involve acute therapies, which are taken by the patient at the onset of a migraine, or preventive treatments, which may involve daily drug therapy.

I couldn't used to, but when it became such a problem with my pharmacy making mistakes with my meds, I threatened him so much, & they complained so much to him, that he broke down & bought some gadget that he holds in his hands, uses a small steel pick thing to "type" with that goes straight, it seems to his printer. Because by the time I get dressed, & walk up front, my scripts are all "typed" out & waiting for me. I think it's always been a prerequisite in Med School that to be a Dr. you 1st had to have the very worst penmanship in the world. I honestly don't think they will accept you otherwise because you'd make all of the instructors look so bad. I knew at a very young age that I could never be a Dr., because I loved to write, took great pride in my cursive, & always did it very nearly & legibly! That was one career choice that was naturally stolen from me before I was born...lmbo!
