This sounds like a Kubotan. However it's not used to "smash people to a pulp". Its primary use is pressure point and nerve manipulation. This is, in my opinion, one of the most effective short range weapons ever envisioned.

escrima or kali sticks came from the phillipines.bo,jo,bokken, tonfa
and there is quite a few more came from okinowa.not 100% sure but i dont think there are actually any wooden weapons that came from japan other than okinowa.you need to look at the history of martial arts (and asian history) to see why.the japanese and the chinese forbade okinowins from carrying steel bladed weapons as they didn't belong to either country and they were a threat.they had no choice but to make and learn to use them.after that they started modifying farm tools and other tools to become weapons.this may not be 100% correct but it's pretty close.and no i wasn't alive then hahaha

There are Escrimas which are just a straight wooden stick, or Tonfas which are a straight wooden stick with a small handle on the one side. You can take a look at all kinds of these weapons at the site below. This is where i get all my weapons from and they are reasonably priced.

You are referring to the Yawara, which is also know as Kubotan, eda koppo, koppo stick, Ju-jo, etc.

The concept of this tool is to fill the hand and make it a solid weapons against an attackers vulneral points (kyusho).
