Wow, so many possibilities here.
1) He didn't think he wanted to date, but realized you could be that special someone for him.
2) He said that as a reinforcement to himself to avoid getting hurt. He really does want one but didn't want to be shot down.
3) He was trying to be sure to keep himself open for just the right girl.
Those are my top 3 bets. :-) Regardless, it doesn't matter (much) what and why he said what he said. What matters is whether YOU feel that you would like to date him.

He sounds like he doesn't have a clue what he wants in a relationship. Don't sit there waiting for him to make up his mind .... lots of other guys out there.

Saying that he doesn't want a girlfriend is just a way to keep the undesirables away.
When he sees someone he wants to be with that becomes meaningless.

basically, he's playing with you and isn't sure if he wants to be with you or not. He's probably trying to get to know you better before he decides that. I would use great caution with him, because he sounds like he's giving mixed signals.
