her purpose is to ensure she is drinking water and that its before she gets out of work because she most likely will slack off at home. she claims that sometimes it is almost 5 pm and has quite a few ounces left so she makes herself drink them even if she is not thirsty by 5 pm regardless of the situation. She says that 2 out of five times she will get diahrrea. i know this is not healthy, but what could cause this? she has no intestinal problems. this happens only when she drinks too much in too little time. i have never heard of it but she says shes okay with it because it is "probably cleaning out her system". Does anyone know what this could be and if its a good sign of gast. cleansing? has this happened to anyone?

I drink more water than that every day and I never get any kind of intestinal problems. To the contrary, I get constipated if I'm not drinking enough water.

Maybe her electrolytes are out of whack. You can get diahrrea if your body doesn't have enough potassium. Have her try eating one banana per day.

This has happened to me before. I think its a natural response to drinking too much water in such a short period of time. The body doesn't absorb all that water quick enough, so it ends up passing through you into the large intestine and then rectum where it loosens your stool causing diahrrea. I don't know if it has any type of benificial cleaning properties for the bowel itself, but drinking an adequate amount of water is important for removing toxins from the body. I'd recomend spacing it out more to avoid the diahrrea. I would doubt that 9 glasses a day is harmful in any way except for the discomfort it can create. Remember though that a glass is considered 8 oz., so if she's refilling her big gulp from the 7 / 11, it might be too much.

There is such a thing as drinking too much water. Excessive water consumption can thin the blood resulting in a drunken like state and even death. But it takes like 40 glasses back to back to get this result, and would be very difficult to achieve.

One last point. If she stops drinking so much, does the diahrrea go away? If not, she may have a serious problem like a parasite or infection.

The frequent diahrrea is not a good sign and needs to be worked up medically if she hasn't already done this. Too much water should not give you loose stools and not that does not mean her system is cleaning itself out. As for drinking 9 glasses of water all before 5 PM that is not hard to do depending on when she starts in the morning. If she starts at 9 Am that is only one glass of water per hour which is fine.

She should lighten up a little on the water especially if she's not eating too much during this period - she could cause herself serious harm by drinking too much water and getting an electrolyte imbalance. It sounds counter-intuitive but it's true. The diarrhea could be just super loose stools from the water. Your friend sounds like she should seek some sound medical advice and perhaps visit a therapist as well as she sounds a little OCD (obsessive compulsive). Also, suggest that she be checked for diabetes as dehydration, extra water intake and gastro-intestinal issues are all symptoms.

The water should not be causing diarrhea. I would find out if she is drinking bottled water (of the same brand) all the time or mixing tap water sometimes. Some tap water contains bacteria that could be causing her problems. Keeping a daily diary of EVERYTHING she eats/drinks on a daily basis will help establish if there is a pattern to when she's getting the diarrhea. Also, any medications (even over the counter meds should be listed)..
It would not hurt to have a Dr. look at her to try to find out what is going on.
She may have colon problems she's not aware of.
Good luck.

Actually it may not be the amount she's drinking so much as the volume she's drinking all at once. Too much water (esp. all at once) CAN cause diarrhea and you see this in nursing homes, etc., when sedentary people are encourage to drink more water than they really need.

It's not common but it can happen. No, I would not consider this a "good sign". Tell her to do a search for "water intoxication" for more info.

I drink about 6 bottles of water a day, usually before 5 pm, so I dont see how this is happening to her. ONCE in a great while will I get diareah, but I bet she is eating alot of Fiber filled foods and its just coming out soft, and isnt diareah and she is thinking that it is. SOUNDS gross, but thats probably what it is.

Since i joined weight watchers i drink 64 oz of cold water a day and have never had diarrhea from it. There has to be something else going on with her to cause this.
