I have thick straight hair so I know where you're coming from.
Use a curling mousse then blow dry. Spray a light coat of hair spray before you use the curling iron. I've used curlers but I like my curls a bit more 'controlled' and tight. Curler just make my hair too wild and out of control. After you remove the curling iron spary the strains again. It should keep your curls all day.
Try John Freda products...there is also some good curling products by Aussi.

what you need is a defuser some mousse, gel, and hair hairspray, first put mousse and gel not alot through because it will take a long time to dry then while your defusing add hair spray all over as it starts to dry. A defuser is a piece that adds to the end of a blowdryer it looks like a bowl with plastic fingers in it. It makes you look like you have a perm then once your hair is dry take a 1/4" curling iron and randomly choose pieces of hair and rap your hair around it, pull out in a spiral motion to give it body especially on the top. That should work I have straight hair and it works for me.

After you wash your hair, you should then lightly towel dry it
You then put a good setting lotion through your hair (not mousse)before setting your entire head on medium sized salon type plastic mesh or magnetic rollers about 1" - 1 1/2" diameter,
You should then let your hair "Air dry" can take a few hours depending on length of your hair, try to avoid using curling irons, heated rollers and hooded dryers as they all can cause heat damage,
after your hair is dry remove rollers and use your fingers to set your curls into place.
use organic based shampoos and conditioners for your hair as they will stop chemical build up

you need hairspray and maybe gel. When you get out of the shower-put some mild holding gel in your hair and let the hair dry. As you being curling, make sure to gently spray each strand. This allows the cirl to hold while forming

for straight hair, spiral curls look cute. first, you need mousse, gel or hairspray. apply this to semi-wet hair,blow-dry and then use a curling iron. or you could always get a perm. i wouldn't recommend those, however, since they tend to damage the hair.
