"Peanut allergy is caused by an immune system malfunction. Your immune system identifies peanuts as harmful triggering the production of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to neutralize the peanut protein (allergen). The next time you come in contact with peanuts, these IgE antibodies recognize it and signal your immune system to release histamine and other chemicals into your bloodstream.
Histamine and other body chemicals cause a range of allergic signs and symptoms. Histamine is partly responsible for most allergic responses, including runny nose, itchy eyes, dry throat, rashes and hives, nausea, diarrhea, labored breathing and even anaphylactic shock." this is from Mayoclinic.com

I can eat peanuts and cashews, but am allergic to all other types of nuts. I don't know what the difference is though. I believe that it all depends on the way the nuts are processed. I also think peanuts go through more processing than most natural tree nuts, so it may be something either in the cooking process or with your body's physical makeup towards peanuts.
With me, a cookie or cake can be made with fine nut flour and I get sick. Just the smell of walnuts or pecans makes my stomach turn over. Such a tiny amount can cause my throat to swell (it may be hives), so that it's hard to breath. I have to drink plenty of water or eat something to soothe my throat. Luckily, I've never had it so bad where I ended up in the ER.

The peanut is a member of the legume family, and does not grow on tree and is not true nut.
A peanut allergy is one of the most common food allergies because the peanut proteins can act as powerful allergens, even in tiny amounts.
People can have severe reactions just by inhaling the odour or fragrance of peanuts. Allergists agree people with peanut allergy can die after ingesting or inhaling minute amounts of peanuts or peanut products.
Life-threatening food allergies (most commonly to nuts, peanuts, or shellfish) can kill children in two ways. The first is called laryngospasm. As the food is swallowed, it produces immediate swelling that spreads to the vocal cords. If the vocal cords swell shut, the child is unable to breathe and dies with terrifying rapidity.
The second mechanism is called anaphylactic shock. The child swallows and digests the food and, as long as two hours later, goes into shock and dies.
