What do you think about the Montessori School system? I am considering sending my child to preschool...

I think it's fabulous. I started Montessori school at age three and went for 2 years of PK and 1 year of Kindergarten. I have very clear memories of the time and they are all good. I honestly thought I was just 'having fun' all day and I never realized that the toys were educational. Many of the toys dealt with math skills (esp. geometry, fractions) and we were completely unaware of that. Most children were reading without major difficulty by age 4.

A number of parents chose to send their children to public school after that because they wanted them to be able to socialize. The local Montessori school for older children had very few students who continued their education there beyond K (not to mention it was expensive).

I began 1st grade with a handful of children that had gone to the same Montessori school that I had. We were extremely advanced in most subjects (math in particular) compared to the majority of other 1st graders and we were considered 'gifted' and took part in those programs. I remember being 6 years old and peering into the Kindergarten room at my public school and not understanding why the children were running around all day, screaming and hitting each other.

Today, I don't necessarily believe we were any more 'gifted' than any of the other children. Though I think that the Montessori method enabled us to "tap into" that at a much earlier age.

I was actually unimpressed with montessori...

I had my 2 oldest sons in Montessori...my 3rd son went to the park district pre school....I spent 1/3 of the cost at the park district ...and my youngest actually had the best experience...

He received the same quality "kindergarten prep" and had a ton of fun...

Montessori seemed to emphasize more "life" lessons...going to the airport..the store...things like that..where my youngest spent more time on letters..animals..etc. He has been my most prepared kindergarten student....

either choice you make will be the right one...my "answer" would be...just dont rule out a regular preschool...for the "montessori" name...
