In many jokes and novels, Irish guys are often called Seamus. Yet, when I went to Ireland, people told me that it is not such a popular first name in Ireland. Why? I find it cute

I think its a good name too, I was going to call my son Seamus but I got out-voted.. I do still call my son seamus as his nickname though. It seems the young Irish are not following tradition.... times have now changed and they like to use the more modern type of names from all around the world or copying from the rich and famous ! don't you think

leprechauns in pantomines etc are often given this name in Ireland. True, it is not a very popular first name. it is the irish for James. it is also considered quite an old name.

Its a name used in Newfoundland Canada as well. First off, I'd feel sorry for a kid with the name because people always pronounce it wrong when they read it (Its supposed to be pronounced shame-us, but they pronounce it seem-us). Secondly, its just dorky and the poor kid would be teased and beat up. There is an AM TV host in Toronto with the name , and he's just plain dorky himself. Check it out: http://www.ctv.ca/canadaam
