You can in an emergency just like you can cook with anything that generates heat but be careful with safety here if you do that in a gas log fireplace. It is certainly doable.

I do, it is no different than wood or propane. When the electric goes out and that is the only thing you have, then do it...also, it is a good way to heat water for a bath.

If it heats, it can be cooked over----any type of heat source
