When you're in the dark, your pupils get larger to accomodate the amount of light into the room (to let more light into your eye so you can see better) . When you go into the sun or light...your pupils constrict because there is adequate light for you to see normally.

The light receptors at the back of your eye are very sensitive. They work best with a certain amount of light.
That's where your iris, the colored part of your eye, plays it's part.
It contracts or expands depending on the amount of light coming to your eye.
Go in your bathroom with a flashlight and close the door.Turn off the light and turn on the flashlight. If you look in the mirror you'll see that your pupils are larger. They open up to let in more light so that you see better. Now reach over (still looking in the mirror!) and turn on the light switch. You'll see your pupils get smaller real quick! Your eyes are adjusting to the high level of light that you just subjected them to.
The amount of time that it takes your pupils to contract is the reason for the pain you feel when the lights come on.Your irises were wide open, and now they're flooded with bright light. They just needed a second or two to adjust.

Your eyes are very sensitive. When you are in the dark, your pupils dilate to let more light in. When someone flips a light switch on, your pupils are trying to shrink to let less light in because its not necessary for them to be open so much. Its a matter of sensitivity and reaction time.

That's simple. Your pupils open up wider in the dark/low light to let in more light so you can see better. When your pupils are wide open and someone turns a light on too much light is let in before your pupils can get smaller again (to let in less light) thus causing PAIN.
*ouch*

Because your eyes have been in the dark for so long they adjust to the amount of light, so when you turn on the lights, they go into shock because of the major increase of light, so it takes them awhile to adjust.

Please clarify whether eyes really burn or u just feel intolerance to light ( it is bothering for you)? because intolerance to light can occur in certain conditions for example infalmmation in eyes but burning caused by light is something new for me. Can u please also tell how long that problem lasts after exposure to light?

Maybe it could be your pupils accommodating to the change in lighting.
