actually, i would stay the heck away from those magazines. most of thier ideas involve weaves, or texturizers.

google motown girl. she has a ton of great ideas.

You could roller set your hair (set your hair on straws). it looks really beautiful when done. you could do the two stranded cornrows which are easier to do, look sophisticated, and look nice as well when you take them out and have a textured sort of fro. You could cornrow the first part of your hair and have an afro in the back, and braid a bit of colored hair together and wrap it around your hair where the cornrow section meets the afro section (so it's like a hairband kind of). You can try bantu knots, which again look really nice when they come down. You could do comb twists (just get gel and a rat tail comb and twist sections of your hair, instead of two strand twists. It's faster and looks really nice)

there's a ton of great ideas. again, i would try searching motown girl, khamit kinks, napptural hair.com

good luck

The magazines publish styles, but they tell you four easy steps, like thats all it ever takes..I'm a big fan of natural hair even though I permed my own, Twisting can be fun, but I don't think it's so much of a boy look. Cornrows, seem to never go out of style, or you can get someone to sit down for a while ( a couple of hours) and part your hair into squares and individually plait your entire head.
it's a popular look with all the guys on my campus with natural hair. Have you considered dreading? Dreading is hot !!

Hairstyles?
Try twists and curls/braid and curls, flexi rod sets, perm rod sets, finger coils, curlformer sets, wash and gos or bantu knot outs. There's tons of styles to try. Natural hair is so versatile!

Have you tried looking in one of those hair books like Sophistacates Black Hair? They have a mini-mag inside that has nothing but natural styles.

I bought this really neat claw looking clip at Wal-Mart. You just twist your hair and clip the claw into it. The claw is for thick hair, which I have, so it works really well. I can also put my hair in a bun and clip the claw over it. I love my claw thingy.
