You have to first accumulate all the proper tools. Get a ladder, a drop cloth, painter's tape, the right kind of paint, brush and roller, roller pan and an extension pole.
You use the tape to tape the edges of the walls where they meet the ceiling so the paint doesn't get on the walls. Use the brush to go around the room next to the tape. Find out from a paint store what the best ceiling paint is (there's different paint for different purposes) and which roller is best for that paint. (Rollers have different thickness for different purposes.)
Put down a drop cloth so splattered paint doesn't get on the floor or unmovable furniture. Wear old clothes and get eye goggles to protect your eyes or glasses and get started. Use an extension pole if you're not comfortable on a ladder.
An excellent tip if it takes more than 1 day to complete the job, wrap your roller tightly in plastic and refrigerate. Cover the paint pan with plastic wrap and squeeze out all the air. When you're ready to restart, the roller and paint will be ready to go just as if you'd taken a 5 min break.
It's not hard, it just takes the right tools and preparation.
When it's done you'll feel great about your accomplishment.

If the ceiling is not far out of reach, you can buy or hire decorators' stilts, otherwise the best thing is to use a stepladder - one with a platform as the top step. Make sure it's tall enough that you are comfortable and have a hand-hold for one arm while within painting distance of the ceiling with the other arm. For the actual painting use a tray and roller, or a paint pad. The pads are relatively clean to use but also relatively expensive. Use a roller fairly slowly to minimise spray - you can use protective "glasses" if you want to keep it out of your eyes, perhaps a shower cap to protect your hair, otherwise emulsion paint washes off easily so needn't be a worry.

First of all you have to take everything outside your room..if you don't want to splash paint all over your things. If you cant take the things out, make sure that you cover them with plastic or paper..You can go to any Home Depot and get plastic covers. If you don't want to buy it you can use old newspapers and tape them to the areas that you want to protect (of course this will take u longer). You will have to cover the floor and all your furniture. After that, when you start painting make sure that you don't soak the brush or roll in the pain..make sure that you have just enough...since you are painting the ceiling, it will drop a little, but everything is protected now...

Good luck on your project!

Cover or move everything out first. Then use a ladder or a roller with an internally threaded handle. Buy a longer handle or if you have a broom or a mop with a handle that unscrews, do that and see if it fits. No point in buying a handle just for painting.

a roller with a long arm, they have nifty little things that cover the side of the roller that faces you so the paint dosnt splater on you or the carpet, just go to lows or homedepo. and dont forget to cover the carpet with plastic, have fun!!
