you say to get out of it?
Would you go to prison?
How would you face your friends when you came out?

Does anyone know what the penalty is if you refused?

if a Third World War broke out and you don't go and fight for your country, you are branded a coward and put into prison for the duration of the war, You'd never be able to look at your own refection again, never mind your fiends, (who probably did go and fight, and spilt blood and shared the losses with the rest of us) You would be shunned by society for not fighting for the country in its hour of need Unless you are a Quaker (and you need evidence to back this claim up) or a Concenetious Objector, you would have to go and fight, if the Third World War did break out, I would gladly go and fight! As would be my duty to do so! If I was told to fight, I would gladly join the ranks of the British Army

Our generation may have to, if things carry on the way they are going.

I'll see you on the battlefield, comrade!!

I have served already and in a world war it would be very short as the losing side would want to go out with a nuclear bang. So I would go to a recently decommissioned bunker with a boatload of supplies and wait this out. After such a war there will be little or no govt left. Therefore no penalties as all those records would be destroyed. From that point on it's survival of the fittest and trying to rebuild civilization hopefully this time without the trouble maker known as religion.

Heck yes I would go! I served in the Army for 2 years and I'd be willing to serve our country again if that time came. The only reason why I got out in the first place is because I was pregnant and I didn't want our child to have both parents in th military and deployed!

Ignoring the fact that I am already in the military voluntarily...

I would proudly report for the service of my Nation.
I don't know what the modern penalty would be but if it is as extreme as treason, that still holds the death penalty. (I doubt it would go as far as that, it would probably be a prison stint)
I was born in this proud Nation and am a patriot. I would readily fight for my Nation if needs be (That's why I joined the RAF in the first place)

If Ireland declare war on a superpower and would accept a very 'late' middle aged man in a 'reserved' occupation I'd be at the front of the queue

Refusal to fight is usually on religious or moral grounds, for penalties see

I would go, the nature of my work already we would probably already be there supporting the Royal Navy. I work for the RFA ( Royal Fleet Auxiliary ) and we support the RN around the world. I have seen areas of conflict from Sierra Leone to Lebanon earlier this year and would not hesitate to take a ship to war.

To be called up means you would be conscripted and have no choice in the matter, unless there were very real medical grounds or you registered as a conciencious objector in which case you would be expected to do other war work e.g. medic, stretcher bearer, ambulance driver or other non combatant roles. Forgot to say I would gladly go to defend this country which may have its faults but is still where many other people want to be so can't be that bad!

I would join up as you should protect your country and families. Anybody who would not sign up if called upon, would be either a coward or or a sponger taking all and giving nothing back. Whether the reason for the war was just or not you should do all you can for your country. If you would not fight to protect your country you should get out now, or suffer the consequences of inaction when the time comes, as it surely will, and sooner than you think.

First, I think we already are in a World War.

Secondly, I already did my time in the US Navy.

Thirdly, if the current world war escalates to the point where a 39 year old is called to serve, I would think that the end of the world is at hand, and I would much rather spend my remaining time on earth with my family. Make no mistake about it. I would go down swinging. Sailors know how to fire weapons too.
