There are 3 main types of Salmonella. Salmonella typhi, S. paratyphi A, S. paratyphi B. These all cause Enteric fever or typhoid fever. It is a serious Infection but with proper treatment rarely fatal

First line drugs is a fluroquinolone called ciprofloxacin very effective 500mg taken 12th hourly for 10 days gives complete cure.
Other drugs used are
Chloramphenicol
Cotrimoxazole
Ampicillin
Amoxycillin

Many Salmonella strains are resistant to the above 4 drugs now, if the strain is found to resistant to Ciprofloxacin as well a cephalosporin drug called Ceftriaxone is given. it is reserved for multi drug resistant Salmonella.

You have to take medicine for Salmonella cos the bacteria can colonize the Gall bladder which will lead to a Carrier state.

The usual test to diagnose it is called the Widal test using blood in the first week of illness.

The signs are
Diarrhea with blood alternating with constipation
high fever
mild splenomegaly
Characteristic red color spots on the chest called rose spots (very rarely seen)

usually you can tell if you have it from not just diarrhea but from throwing up as well. Get yourself to an emergency room because salmonella poisoning can be fatal. I suspect they will pump your stomach and give you medicine. You get it from bad meat, fruit or vegetables, anything that has been grown in dirt that has been contaminated with feeces. Usually the country you live in will put a notice on the tv and radio telling you there has been an outbreak of a particular product appearing for sale in your grovery store (but it can also happen if you or your neighbors have a farm and the produce comes to you thru a stand they have on the street for selling produce, and the produce has not been inspected). If you have diarrhoea, you have to give your stool sample for bacterial culture. Plus there are some serological tests that are available to detect the antibodies raised in our body against the bacterial infection. Yahoo answers is not the best way to get it treated. If you have blood in diarrhoea, then it is most likely that it is Shigella dysentry and not typhoid.

Chloramphenicol, ampicillin, amoxicaillin, cotrimoxazole are first line drugs. 2nd line-- cefixime. 3rd line -- ceftriaxone. Ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin are also newer drugs, with high sensitivity. You can get your stool cultured to see if you have it. Early in enteric fever (typhoid) , blood culture is done. Later, bone marrow culture has a high yield.
