I am taking my 7 year old niece to California for her Christmas vacation. I was wondering what kind of identification will I need for my niece to prevent problems with security? Or do they even care?

If you are already in the US, you shouldn't need anything. Flying to another country requires all that extra information. I know I check in children all the time and I have never looked at a singe piece of paperwork for them or asked what their relation to the person flying with them is. They'll want to look at her boarding pass through security of course, but that is it.

You should have her birth certificate,a letter of permission from her parents, which includes your name and that you are an Aunt of hers. [ Plus any other documentation such as a child passport if she has one. ] Also it may be worth while to call a travel agent and ask this question. Have Fun !
