Your child will get enough of the violence, sex and language when she is older, stick with the G rated movies and shows. My dream is to keep children nieve untill they HAVE to know about these things. I support them knowing that they exist, but why should be SHOW them? Life is too tough.. keep them as children as long as you can.

My two year old only watches PBS, Noggin, Bear in the Big Blue House, and Elmo's World. That is our choice because of the educational quality of these programs. In the evening we usually either sit together and read or watch kids movies or we make sure she has one of the above mentioned going on the other TV and we check on her frequently (the other TV is in her playroom/den and she has lots of toys and books there ...funny thing is she is usually reading when we walk in on her!)
At 6 years old she may be allowed to watch things like the CMA awards (anything musically inclined probably as she loves music!...well except MTV as it is just a perverted piece of junk!)
She will be allowed to watch a little more than PBS and we will probably increase our number of disney movies and childrens movies ..... I think at that age, as long as the parent is willing to discuss the show with the child it is a very personal choice what a child watches. I will let her watch the news understanding that she can ask me any questions and that we will talk about it as well. I think communication is very important and that includes talking about TV shows and what is going on in them. I would prefer she did not watch shows that have parental advisories before them (CSI, NCIS, Despearate Housewives, etc.) but some sitcoms would be ok I think.....
Really...let me empower you as a parent. It is your right to decide what your daughter does and does not watch on TV and, regardless of how strict it makes her think you are, you need to take that right and use it. It helps to be able to explain more why you are not letting her watch instead of just saying 'because mommy said so". This is a very personal issue and you should not measure your actions based on the actions of others.

I have an eleven year old son and an eight year old daughter. There are still certain cartoons they are not allowed to watch on nickelodeon and cartoon network is out of the question unless it is Scooby Doo. They know when the "not allowed" cartoons come on, it is time to change the chanel and they do. Most Disney shows are allowed. It is the commercials that bother me on most any stations now days. Most commercials need a rating of R. There is way too much content in them today. No child needs to know how "certain" medications make you react or now there is an exercise commercial that speaks of making a mans "drive" much better. Movies that are PG, they know I have to view before they are allowed to watch them. You are not being over protective, you are being a responsible parent.

You go ahead and be a "strict mommy", I am one too. There are a lot of things I won't let my 10 year watch either. He likes the Disney channel, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite (I monitor some of those shows now) and TV Land. You can tell her that there are A LOT of parents just like you out there. There is one in North Carolina who will not let her child watch whatever he wants and he doesn't like it, but he knows its better to watch what is appropriate for him than to watch no TV at all.

There are definately some programs that I don't let my duaghter watch because today's tv shows and movies are getting more explicit and sometimes 'filthy', that I wouldn't even watch myself. Especially on the OXYGEN channel sundays after dark, I have that password blocked on my parental program. I absolutely abhore that show Bliss they play on there, granted it is on late on a sunday night, but you never know when your child might wake up and get a snack and maybe watch some tv and channel surf right over to that particular channel.

I'll write this as if speaking to your daughter directly--maybe you'll have to help with some of the bigger words:)
There are some things that are okay for adults like Mommy because adults know how to understand things better than children. Not because children are stupid, but because they haven't seen or been involved with as many things as their mom's and dad's. Some television shows show things that kids have never seen for themselves or heard of, and it can be very confusing to watch these things on television before you know about them for yourself. You have to build up to the kinds of things your Mommy understands, and it starts with watching shows that your Mom says are good for kids. The older you get, the more about the world you'll understand and the more you'll be able to watch.
Your Mom loves you and doesn't want to confuse you with things that kids just don't understand yet, and to let you be able to figure some of these things out for yourself the older you get.

When it comes to kids shows, only PBS. We don't even have cable to entice us into the endless mind numbing television vortex.
I have let my kids watch some reality shows, American Idol, Survivor, Extreme Home Makeover, American's Funniest Home Videos.
The best way to play it safe is to watch family oriented shows.

television ends for six year olds after 5 pm. She should be in bed by eight or nine o clock anyways. Books make you smarter, tv only appeals to the eye. Even too much Treehouse is no good

My son, who is also 6, does not get to watch tv. We had cable at our last house, but he ended up just spaced out on the tv. So when we moved, I decided no cable. We only watch the occasional movie. Consider yourself lucky!
