It is very important. For instance, there are islamic fundamentalists out there that think I should die just because I do not believe as they do. This totally scares me into wanting to know what other people believe. Any group that will riot over a simple cartoon is severely dangerous!!!

Well, yes it is. If we start with the assumption that what I believe is right, which is what everyone must think about their own beliefs, or why would they believe them... Stay with me, you must assume this is true to hear my response.
In my beliefs, those people that do not have a relationship with Christ are going to hell. My beliefs also tell me that I must love my neighbor. What could that mean but to care that they believe as I do so they can escape hell? If I didn't care what they believed, I'd no longer be following my own beliefs. It should be out of love that I share my beliefs.

It's important to me because...they vote. And they're organized.
We don't live in a bubble and when most of my country believed slavery was condoned by god, the whole country had that in our laws. Ditto rights for women. Now we're fighting about stem cell research, rights of homosexuals and even which country we invade is tied to religious reasons. So I care deeply about what people believe on that level.
And on a personal level I care too. Because I want the best for them and living under certain kind of beliefs can be really damaging to people.

It is important from a societal perspective. When a man believes that he has truth, that is not reality, and that person can determine what is taught in a classroom, or the laws that effect me in my house, and what I do that has no effect on the lives of others a line is crossed. It is at that point that those of us who don't share those beliefs need to question the validity of their perspective.

I wouldnt say that it is important, but I feel that it is neccessary to understand how others believe. A holistic approach of mans ideas is the only way to achieve peace and acceptance of oneself. To me it is vital to know the thought proccess of others because it helps you to understand your own. And this is the direct link through god from the relfection on oneself through others(the human experience) You cannot learn anything, if you think you have the answers. I always keep this in mind when it comes to another person's perception. I wish you well

I'm a Christian, and of course, it's important to me what people believe. But, I don't push my faith on them.
I first try to get to know them, and I give respect to their different beliefs. For example, I sat next to a couple on the airplane a few weeks ago, and they were Hindu. She kept a little Hindu god on her lap the entire trip.
We talked, I asked her about her faith, and she asked me about mine. It was a 9 hour flight from London, and we had an amazing time!
It's called making relationships and planting the seed.

It only becomes important when it harms society. When it affects even a minority group to the point that they feel they are ostrasized from the very society they were born into.

It's important to me to challenge irrational beliefs yes. I just have a natural aversion to anything that doesn't conform to logic or isn't supported by viable evidence.

Yes.
Communication is improved when you understand another individuals beliefs and view points. You do not have to agree with that belief, but we need to respect that belief within limits.
Also, it is impotent to understand other view points so that we can cultivate friendships and relationships.
I may not share the same beliefs concerning another persons religion...But, it improves communication, if I can understand that religion and the person's culture.
Hope that I answered your question.

It is important to me only when I'm using it to gauge our evolution as a society. Otherwise, others can have their own beliefs as long as they respect mine.
