There are so many people asking questions about the breeding process. I don't understand it! Is money more important to people then the lives of living breathing creatures?
I would like a good solid justifiable reason why there should be more dogs in this world. And I don't want to hear about money, or that your dog is wonderful and would produce great pups for families with kids.

Sheesh people. I do not hate dogs. I have had shelter/rescue mutts for 30 years. And what a sad place this would be if dogs were wiped off the face of the earth! I would just like to see the shelter populations decrease. I would like people to really look at the statistics before allowing your dog to breed! If you're not involved in a lifetime of taking care of dogs...DON'T BREED!
Breeders are in a different world, I know that. It's a love, a lifestyle and a business. (Not that I would ever purchase from one personally).
I'm sorry some of you feel that this was a stupid question. It's an important issue to me and I want to know why every other schmoe on the street wants to breed their dog.

I wasn't trying to insult the reputable breeders either. They're not the ones asking all the questions! (At least I would hope not)

I totally agree with you. It seems as though every third question is asking about how or should I breed my dog. If it's not about how to breed, then it's about how can I tell if my dog is pregnant, or I think my dog is pregnant and what to do.
Why can't people research these things ahead of time? I realize that mistakes and accidents happen, but if your dog got pregnant by accident, do some research before she's going into labor instead of asking a bunch of strangers for help.
I guess we're both going to get slammed for this, ...
lol. I think breeding should be left left to reputable breeders.
EDIT TO ADD:
It's kind of sad that you had to edit your question. I completely understood it. I think sometimes people don't read it all, or read what they want to read. Leave the breeding to the people who know what they're doing!!

Let's look at it this way:
Some for money
Some for love
Some for both money and love
Any of those reasons don't cut it in my book. The only reason I would breed a dog is if I was using that particular breed for working purposes. If I lived in BFE and owned a herd of sheep and used Border Collies to herd them I would breed a litter or 2.
If I lived in Africa and owned a herd of goats that mean the life or death of my family and the only thing between them and the cheetahs was an Anatolian Shepherd, heck yeah I would breed 'em.
If I was handicapped or someone I knew was and needed assistance then sure I would breed some labs or retrievers.
It just comes down to ignorance. Dont be stupid people, dont breed your mutt, dont breed for money, dont breed because you think your dog has champion lines.
If you have to ask then don't do it

the only reason they can justify is greed i live in the country and i get dogs and cats dropped off by my house all the time gutless people cannot deal with any responsibility i have 3 dogs and 10 cats because of these breeders but i would never get rid of one of them. i dont think anyone thinks about the dog or cat it is all about money and the only way they can prove me wrong is to stop doing it and take care of the dogs or cats they have instead of dumping them off somewhere when they are no longer useful animals do have feelings a lot of people just dont care

Most purebreds are not worth the money the people ask for them Responsible breeders care not for the money, but truly about improving the breed. I would say that there are fewer than 1% of the people breeding animals out there that do it responsibly and ethically. No we are dog-lovers-we do not want to erase dogs from the earth. We want irriesponsible people to stop creating so many that most of them need to be put to death before their 2nd birthday. Only 1 of 10 pups born today will find a permanent home.

I don't think there is a solid justifiable reason for so many people to be breeding their pets. If their pet isn't breed standard, breed quality with all of the tests and stuff done then they shouldn't be breeding. Especially mutts I don't get that at all. I am sure their are some wonderful mutts out there that people love dearly but I don't understand breeding them on purpose or not spay/neutering them.

I totally agree with you! There is no excuse good enough to breed your animal. I guess most people just do not understand how important it is to spay and neuter your pets. They do not have the facts and figures... I know at one time I didn't either... and to find out how many animals die on average in shelters just totally shocked me. I was disgusted by the whole thing. It is incredibly important.
Plus consider this. One female cat and her first litter of kittens over a 7 year period can produce over 400,000 other cats.
Or
One female dog and her first litter can produce over 300,000 other dogs over a 7 year period.
Help control the population.
Over 7 million animals die in shelters every year due to the lack of homes.
Everyday on average about 10,000 human children are born and everyday on average about 70,000 puppies and kittens are born as well. Please do the math
An animal dies in a shelter about every 40 seconds.
Stop the abuse! Stop the neglect!

We breed when we want to add to our own 'family' of dogs. There have been times when we have kept the entire litter ourselves, selling/placing none.
We show/sled/work our dogs, attend numerous events throughout the year.
When we do have pups to place, the prospective owners are carefully screened and we have contracts that call for the pup to be returned to us should anything happen. We maintain contact with the owners of ALL our pups, talking with them at least once a year, often more frequently.
We only breed every other year, on average, but occasionally we will breed twice in one year if special circumstances are there.
All the dogs we use for breeding are titled, either in the show ring or in the 'field', with working titles, often and preferably titled in both arenas. They have CGC's and have had their temperament proven by attending the numerous events I mentioned. They also have had all the required genetic testing done beforehand.
Sometimes we breed one of our males to one of our females, but generally, we go out for a male. We have also gotten pups sired by one of our males and an outside female.
Do we breed for money? Not a chance. I don't believe we have ever actually MADE money on a litter. Once in a great while, we have broken even, but with all the money spent on testing the parent(s), even selling the pups for $1,000 doesn't cover the expenses.
IMO, producing solid specimens of your specific breed is the ONLY reason to breed. Not to make money, but for the love of the breed.

I know... I completely agree. I have to admit, my family bred ONCE... we had a litter of 7 dalmatian puppies. But that wasn't up to me.. I was 6 years old! I am glad we did breed one though, because it was such a lovely experience and a really lovely childhood memory. But I certianly do not encourage breeding of ANY animal. I have bred my guinea pigs a few times but I have stopped - there are far too many of these too. Breeding is risky and the animals have no say in it. It's UNFAIR and is just irresponsible!

I agree with you completely!! My sister kept wanting to breed her dog to get some money out of her and then she wanted to get rid of her!!?It's absurd, some people will do litter after litter, that can't be good for an animal.

Some people just like to have puppies around their house. Most breeders, whether they are breeding mutts or dogs with papers make sure their dogs go to good homes. Also, breeding mutts usually produces a dog of better quality than one with papers.
Asking why people want to breed their animals is like asking why people breed. I don't understand why some people keep having kids long after they've exhausted their financial resources and cannot sucessfully care for their children.
