Ive been in the situation where I have woken up to a burgler in my room.
I stayed very still till he walked out then as I heard him in another part of the house I got up, pretended to trip over something and cursed, turned all the lights on and went to the toilet.
By the time I had finished he had scarpered, and he hadn't taken anything at all!
Most burglers dont want to be caught, so I found this worked fine,
But before you try it please note that I lived in a country where it is illegal to own a hand gun, so my chances of pulling this off were a lot higher.

Walk around your house and imagine how you would get inside if you had locked your keys in there or lost them .........scary isn't it?
Next thing to do is get a spare set of keys cut to leave with a trusted neighbour or family member and "burglarproof " your property . The following website is a good place to start . Good luck & stay safe .

Don't leave valuables out in the open, lock all doors and windows, and if you can invest in a home alarm system that would be best. Watch Discovery Channel It takes a Thief.

Good quality door locks, window locks, well lit outdoor areas. Irregular household routines, Communicate with neighbors, watch each others homes when the other is gone.

Since you asked this in a travel section, I'll assume you're traveling. Take a straight backed chair, and angle it under the door knob. That will effectively keep anyone from entering. Close your curtains, and that may effectively keep anyone from wanting to.
