My 5 year old Golden Retriever is acting like she is pregnant, when I know for sure she isn't. If I had to describe it, I would say she is 'brooding' or 'nesting'. She carries toys around and licks them, whines, always wants to be near us, pants heavily, and generally seems to be going through some emotional issues. She has had puppies, two years ago. She hasn't been fixed, but we are certain she isn't pregnant.

I have seen her exhibit lesser versions of this behavior before and it usually fades after a few days, I assume this too will pass.

Is it anything to worry about? We are thinking of having her fixed, will that stop this?

I am VERY certain she isn't pregnant. I work from home and she spends most of the day under my desk at home.

False pregnancy, where a female goes through all the symptoms of pregnancy except of course, the enlargement of uterus and having puppies, is very common in dogs. The behaviors you describe are all normal for bitches in false pregnancy. A ***** can even make milk with a false pregnancy and a few times when I've had a litter where the mother had no milk, I put the pups on a ***** who had a false pregnancy and the foster mother made enough milk that I only had to tube feed the pups during the day and the foster mom made enough milk to feed them during the night!

She is having a false pregnancy. Very common in dogs. Het her work her way thru it. At times she may seem depressed. She knows the stuffed animals aren't real, but she needs something to mother. Just give her loads of attention. She will be fine in a couple of weeks.

I had a chihuahua with a false pregnancy that nursed 6 orphan pups from the day they were born until they were weaned.

I agree with the false pregnancy, only if you are 150% certain that she has not been bred. It could have happened when you weren't home (if she stays outside). Male dogs can actually get a female through a chain link fence, not to mention digging in/out of the yard. I would take her to the vet just to be sure.

sounds to me like she is going threw a false pregnancy. Give it time it will pass. Let her carry around her toy and continue doing what she is doing, eventually she will get over it.

She might be acting pregnant so the stud commits to her. Is he a good-looking stud? Does the stud have a job that gets him lots of treats?
