According to recent figures, the Roman Catholic population of England is around 10%, having said that, I think more Roman Catholics attend Church on Sundays than their Anglican Cousins! In Ireland, the Roman Catholic Faith is by far the largest and it is the 2nd biggest denomination in Scotland. The Roman Catholic religion in England was almost wiped out over the centuries after the Reformation and in bloody and cruel ways. Slowly the tide turned and in the 1800's Roman Catholics were slowly given new rights to own property etc and these eventually were extended to virtual equal rights with the rest of the population. The Roman Catholic Hierarchy of the Church was restored in the 1850's and by late Victorian Times the Roman Catholic Church had become perfectly respectable again, due to the efforts of such notable men as John Henry Newman and Cardinal Manning(both former Church of England clergy who converted to the Catholic Church ). It is also true that there was a large influx of Irish people from the potato famines onwards and they helped to build new Catholic Churches. The final hurdle to be faced is to overturn the Act of Settlement which still forbids a Roman Catholic becoming Sovereign or marrying the Sovereign. However, any other faith (or none)may do so!

It didn't really. It wasn't until the 1830's, I believe, that Catholicism began to "return" in an acceptable way. If I remember correctly, that was about when Catholics gained the right to vote; it didn't really become any kind of widespread (it still isn't terribly so today) until the later 1800's.

You can't force people to believe what you want them to believe. Genuine Catholics will want to remain Catholic as long as there is a Cathoilc Church.
