How? Are they going to force you to marry someone of the same sex? Are they going to put a gun to your head and make you perform their marriage ceremony?

Brilliant. Thank you for the question.

I agree that churches and individual ministers should not be required to perform weddings for anyone if it is against the congregation's and the minister's beliefs. That would be wrong. But it is also wrong for society to support monogamous unions between opposite-sex couples and not extend that recognition and support to same-sex couples.

The only way marriage inflicts itself upon persons other than the actual spouses is that it carries certain privileges--legal rights and tax privileges.

This is just my opinion, but I think they are talking out of fear.

I think the only benefit of being legally married at all is the benefits the government shows married people.

I think if same sex couples were able to have their life partner on their insurance and if their property was considered community property like it is with married people the issue of legal marriage my not be as big an issue, but I may be wrong.

They just want to have the same benefits for their partners that others have.

So if I am right in my opinion, then same sex marriage does not inflict their views on straight people.

Legalizing or not legalizing anything inflicts the views of the party involved. You legalize gay marriage, you inflict the views of gays who want to marry (yes, there are people, gay and straight who don't believe in marriage) on those who don't like it. And visa versa. If you don't legalize it, you inflict the views of the opposition.

Frankly, though I am against it, I know that given enough time, it will be legalized. That's how we're moving these days. What I am against, solely and strongly, is forcing churches to preform the ceremony. Legalize gay marriages (it'll happen anyway), but keep it out of my church.

Which homosexuals? Is there a particular pair they're concerned about? Or did they check 'em all for 'offensive' opinions like 'meat is murder'. I mean, they DO realize homosexuals are still people and most likely all have different views about different things, right? I mean WHO would be so stupid as to think that all people of a specific little group think alike?

Most likely the same people who think your marriage somehow affects my marriage...

I'd hate to be in such a weak marriage!

This is why I don't understand why chuches really have any problems with gay marriage/civil unions. The marriages will be a state issued right, getting the religious ok would be unnecessary, so why does religion even play a part in this? Why should we judge the morality of gay marriage on a religion (since like you imply, no one will be forcing anyone else to have a same-sex marriage- aka sin)? Why is this not a case for equality?

The real problem that some people see with homosexual marraige is that it busts open the whole male dominance thing, which some folks would like to see revived. If you have two men, which one will be the "guy" and thus be in charge, and if you have two women, then there's not a guy to be in charge.

We should learn to have faith in what we believe, and allow others to believe what they will. Honestly if we would stop trying to force everyone to see things the way WE believe, and spend more times trying to convince them through love, the world would be a nicer place.

We should mind our own business! Help where we can, stand aside when we can't.

It is just a fearmongering tactic used around election time to fool republican simpletons in the red states. Not the rich republicans, they know better, but the hick types in the middle of the usa who are afraid of homosexuality coming to their town.
