Last night I dropped a piece of paper that was plastic coated. It was part of the packaging to some bacon. It was about 5 inches long and maybe an 1/8 inch wide. The cat grabed it before I could pick it up. He took off running with it as I chased him to get it away. He won, he ate it. Do you think I should be concerned or will it just work its way back out? Thank you for any help you can offer.

Ok, I called the vet office, the vet tech says pretty much the same as butterfly..that it SHOULD be Ok, but to watch the litter box and to bring him in if he starts to act out of sorts or stops eating.

I have many cats. It is wise to have him checked but you could wait for signs of lathargy and vomiting. Look in the litter box to see if it is in there. His system won't be able to digest that but it may pass. Call the vet and ask for their opinion? I have found the strabgest things in the litter box (I also have kids) I had a cat eat and pass Play Doh, that was neat. *L* Good luck with kitty!

That's a pretty long piece of plastic. Depending on the packaging, the plastic may be too coarse to be broken down by your cat's stomach acids. If he chewed it up real good, he will probably pass it, but his intestines are far smaller than ours. If you notice ANY straining at all, please contact your vet immediately. What's more likely, is that he will throw it up. I have a cat that loves to chew on my neighbor's artifical flowers in front of her door. He always gets a plastic leaf, chews it and then throws it right up. Hopefully, your kitty will do the same.

go to petsmart and get some laxatone and give him a very large dose of it and that should help. if after a few days it doesn't pass or he doesn't throw it up then take him to the vet.
I have a cat that will eat anything that is laying around even if we clean he will still find something and usually will end up throwing it up, just this morning I woke up and steped in his puke from eating some carpet shreds from their cat tree. crazy kitty. next monday they have a vet appointment and I'm going to bring this up.

he should be able to pass it naturally
anything else and i would have said take him to the vet
though if you notice him visiting the litte bow often and straining to have a bowel movement then rush him to the VET ASAP
he could have a blockage.
I went through the same problem with my rottweiler except he did not eat plastic he ATE a leather leash. I had to pour peroxide down his throat to get him to vomit it all back up.
Any time an animal eats something that you are worried about hurting them and they have done it recently then you can pour peroxide or salt down their throat and this will induce vomiting.

That's a big piece of plastic for a cat to eat.
Safety first, call the vet.

Check, when you clean the kitty litter. If it doesn't pass in a few days, take the cat to the vet.

We have 2 cats whom we adore. One eats paper clips and rubber bands... I was frantic and rushed him to the vet! He told us the same as many of the previous answers - to watch him closely and return if he acted stranger or sick! Dah.... years ago one of my cats ate 2 of our gold finches ( birds) with amazingly no bad results!
He also advised to keep him away form these potentially harmful foods! Good luck....

Chances are it will work it's way back out, but it also might plug him up.
If he starts getting sick, you will have to take him to the doctor.
I had a dog in high school that ate damn near everything in the house. It would always work it's way back out though - even lollipop sticks!

Everything comes out in the end. Our dog when I was little used to eat balls of aluminum foil OUCH. Don't worry, you still have your vet. My Stimpy eats wheat and broom straws. She is 13 and HEALTHY..

It's probably gonna come back out one end or the other. I wouldn't be too concerned but just keep a close eye on him.
