Here are some suggestions: Don't have a tv in your bedroom, sleep only when you start to feel tired, even if it's early evening and you feel tired then go to sleep (ie listen to your body because maybe the time change has messed up your sleep clock). Don't eat before bedtime. Don't drink anything with caffeine (candy, pop, coffee or tea) or anything with sugar for several hours before attempting to sleep). If you're taking any kind of medication (nose spray or for headaches) something in there may be keeping you awake. Even some fragrance you have in your room or you inhale strongly during the day might be affecting you. Did you change your clothes washing powder or liquid recently as maybe that is the problem. Maybe your room doesn't have enough air and you're struggling, so try airing the room out with a fan before you go to sleep. Try drinking half a glass of warm milk before you try to sleep. Try hypnosis sleep tapes. If all that fails then maybe your bed is uncomfortable, maybe you're too warm or too chilly, figure it out. Do you have something on your mind that's worrying you? Discuss that with someone. Start talking to your body, i.e. rest comfortably and then tell your feet to rest then to sleep, then work your way up your body. When you get to your head tell your eyes to sleep, then your brain and let your body relax deeply into the mattress. And if your eyes won't close you keep telling them over and over, and if that part doesn't work then say a little prayer and ask God to help you rest because you can't think straight without your sleep (and your body needs to be restored by deep sleep). If all this doesn't work, see a doctor, get your blood tested and see if something is going on inside.

What do you have on your mind? Usually, we go through periods when stress, diet, etc., interfers with our sleep. But, if it continues we need to look at exactly what the issue is and deal with it.
Try taking a warm bath, don't watch TV or read anything exciting before bed. Don't exercise before bed or get into any heavy discussions, arguements, or thoughts. Make sure the lights in the room in the evening are not bright, but low.
Also, see what you are eating. No caffiene after noon, no large meals or snacks before bed. Get exercise daily.
Are you going through any hormonal changes? If you are a woman in her thirties, you may be in perimenopause.

How long have you been unable to sleep? If you have had insomnia for a while, then it's probably time to visit your doctor. You may have one of many sleep disorders out there. Review all of you symptoms with the doc. He will then determine if you need to have what's called a sleep study. These tests monitor your sleep (or lack of) patterns. You may be surprised at what could be causing your difficulty. Good Luck in getting your Zzz's.

Simple things that you can do:
Do not go to your bed until feeling real sleepy.
Avoid worries; why try sorting out everything in one day. Next day will surely arrive.
Take a bath and try relaxing.
Avoid coffee, tea, or things like that which may result in sleep loss.
Get out of the bed and do not go there until sleep starts coming.
If nothing works, then maybe take a Lorazipam, which shall put you to sleep.

What MadforMAC says it's so very true, but besides all that you can also try aromatherapy, lavender I guess is the scent for you to get relax, take deep breath and think of things than can soothe your mind, before taking any medication. Create a world of your own where noone can bother you.

Try some Sominex or Tylenol PM.
What works the best for me is Benadryl. It will make you extremely sleepy, and I have never ever taken it and not fallen asleep.
Good luck, and I know - tossing and turning sux!
