I woke up this morning and went to feed my parakeets and I noticed there is something wrong with one of them. Symptoms are ruffled/swollen appearance, lethargy, and can't move around too well. He is acting narcoleptic. I have no way to get him to a vet today so I want to find out if there is anything I can do and what is wrong with him. Please help, my daughter will be devestated if she comes home from school & finds out he's dead. Thank you.

Thanks for all the help guys, but the bird passed away this afternoon. Now I just hope his girlfriend doesn't get the same problem too.

Start with keeping its warmer. No matter what it has whether just chiled or sick- it needs this to help with getting back on track. over 75- 85 is good - not over 90. Get temp. gauge to monitor it. Thru heating pad on bottome of cage with paper over it. Or space heater (non teflon parts), heat lamp (check at pet store for details on type and placing of). Some of mine have gotten chilled and this was all it was. These were the symptoms they were displaying. It took about 24 hours of warmth to start perking up and back to normal behavior.

But.......Are stools normal? Is it eating and drinking somewhat normaly. This is important - if these things are too different - it may be more then being just chilled. Could call an Animal shelter and get more detailed information - if they do not know they could give you numbers of a specific place that could - like an Avian resuce center. After that a Vet or Avian Vet is the only other option.

Do check as soon as possible on these things- because once chilled or sick problems can progress very fast.

I looked around through my books from when I used to have a Cockatiel and found nothing helpful, then did a websearch and nothing definitive. Just as soon as possible though, get this creature to an Avian Vet please. Follows is a link that might be helpful to you & your daughter if the little guy gets through his illness okay. Wish you good luck.

Oh, man, It sounds like he's about to visit birdie heaven :-(. Try moving him into some warm sunlight or a lot of light with some heat pay attention that he does not get to hot though. Try to revive him as much as possible.

Your best bet is to see a vet as soon as possible. Birds hide illness and dont show signs they are sick, until they are so ill that they are close to death.
