By using my brain. The purpose of morality is to allow people to live among each other in relative peace. I examine who I am in this world and how I relate to other people. If I don't work with people, the world is a much harder place. Besides, I enjoy the company of other people. I can take pleasure from the pleasure of others. This is perhaps genetic and perhaps part of the "group" phenomenon. People tend to feel empathy towards others in their group. Humanity is a group.

Therefore, I look around and figure out what I need to do for myself and what I can do for others to have a good life. I find that it is usually better to let people live their lives how they wish, if it doesn't adversely affect my life. Still, there are sacrifices and compromises one must make in working with other people.

For example, if I want a good retirement, I must sacrifice years of work to a company, unless I'm very lucky in getting resources. If I want a relationship with another person, we'll have to work out any differences in our morality and determine a common set we can agree on. Still, the live and let live rule tells me it is probably better for me to not force my morality too much on other people.

I can go on, but I think you get the general idea. Societies tend to evolve morally because it helps the society last longer. Longer lasting societies tend not to die out as quickly and influence more other societies.

I determine that by the punishment I got when I was growing up. Everyday behavior warranted going to church every Sunday. When I became a teenager and came in late I was grounded. I did not dare steal, cheat or lie because my father knew all and was all. He wouldn't have the patience for any heavenly father to step in. After all we have been waiting over 2000 years now!
(I am atheist by the way)

You feel it in your body. Your conscience should tell you what is good and moral and what isn't. If you do something or are going to do something and you feel sorta wrong or dirty, then it may not be so moral. If you do it or are about to and you have this overall feelgood ora around you, then it's a good thing. You always feel it in your body, it's either elation or you feel bad about it for the next few days. Always go with your gut feeling! ;-)

I have a measuring stick that I use - the Holy Bible. It tells me all I need to know about living a moral and good life - an abundant life. Also the Holy Spirit within me keeps me, convicts me, of my sin and I can get back on track when I sin. God is so good. I pray you find the Truth - Jesus Christ - before it is too late. Blessings to you.

Mostly its inbuilt through millions of years of evolving a moral sense. Otherwise read up on ethics, JS Mill and Payne would be a good start.

Right and wrong is common sense, as well as logic. For most of us it is not a conscience thought, we instinctively know what is appropriate. We should not want to harm another person, or take something that is not ours. Many examples like that.

Step 1: know and understand the law (civil and criminal)

Step 2: read the Holy Bible with an open heart and an open mind

Step 3: come to peace with these two
