My MIL was dire, I was so glad when the divorce came through coz it meant I was free of her too!

My mother in law is the WORST old BAT on the planet! She refers to me as "that woman my son married."

A few weeks ago we went to dinner with her and my FIL (who is the DEAREST man on the planet!). During dinner I pointed out that I felt a little regret leaving our daughter at home with a sitter that evening, since we had plans for the following evening and she would be home with a sitter then, too. It wasn't even all guilt that I was feeling...I genuinely like the kid and enjoy spending time with her.

"Ugh!" my MIL spat. "You have GOT to learn to LET GO or she'll never get anywhere in life!"

My daughter is 10.

I won't go into the whole shpiel of how she is a latch key kid (getting home from school a full hour before I get home from work) or the six different sports teams that she successfully participates in, or the awesome grades that she receives or how emotionally well balanced she truly is....I just want to point out ONCE AGAIN that she's 10 freekin years old, and my MIL tells me that I need to LET GO!

Of course, if I had mentioned that I was planning to go out of town for the weekend and leave her at home, then I probably would have gotten the whole "what about your family?" routine from the old bat!

I swear, the only thing that sustains me is knowing that one day I'll be the one to choose her nursing home....

I think it must be a 'package deal'--great husband and mother in law from you know where. Lots of us do---hard to accept I know...but she is his mother after all. Your only common ground may be that you love the same person....I pointed that out to my MIL once and it seemed to be food for thought. Good Luck taming the MIL. LOL

Oh My Gosh I have one of those. Mine has even come into my house to tell me how awful of a person I am and bad mother and wife. We didn't talk to her for a year after that. Anyway my husband said that is the only mother I have and we will never change her so what can we do. We just spend very limited time with her and short holidays like a few hours. I just don't really talk to her which is very mature of me, ha but I won't give her the satisfaction of having a conversation with me.

Sometimes, the Mother In Law is just looking out for their child and do not know when to step back. Try to be assertive, albeit not rude, and do your thing.

I have one. She always has some major drama going on in her life. What's worse, she didn't even raise my hubby she was such a horrid mother. I see a marked difference in his happiness when she calls and she typically calls when she WANTS something--like money. Trust me, it could probably be worse. At least she likes me. She's just annoying in general.

Use to ... but the divorce helped with that one ... she drove me crazy ... the way they raised their kids were unbelievable ... she went around calling my daughter a hoochie mama, little diva and thought cursing was the funniest thing ever - every time one of the kids cursed she would laugh and teach them new ones ... her cooking was horrible & to make things worse - her little boy was the biggest mama's boy I've ever seen ... glad I'm not part of her family anymore ... !
