Good grief, you're all quick with answers. Cheers. But surely if you tap it and release the bubbles then that creates gas, which casuses it to fizz up? Any way to test this? Anyone tried to test it?

No, the purpose of the tapping is really just to kill time... tapping has no effect on the soda inside. Also, keeping the soda cold will reduce the amount of fizzing.

Myself, I have never tapped on a can and I have not had one fizz over since I was in elementary school (and that was because of a kid who shook up the can)

Its always worked for me! Dont know why but it does, though I tap it a few more times than twice, maybe 5 or 6, I dont count!

no tap but squeez the sides on a can or plastic bottle, glass is more tricky, but adding pressure causes the fizz to stop internally

Hey i once got told that, and from this day on i still tap the top of my can, especially beer as i wouldn't want to spill that!

i always tap it a few times on the top and bottom, more out of habbit, dont have a clue if it works or not

I don't know if its true, my brother and his best friend have been trying to convince me that it works for months, but I'm not sure i believe them.

i dont know but i do this everytime with a can of fiz and touch wood, ive never had one spill all over me.
