My female dog is 11 yrs old & we got her at 1 yrs old. She has been the only & I never noticed her to go in heat. I did see blood a few times but thought it was what all female dogs did even if spayed. We got our male dog a year ago & planned on neutering him this summer (would have earlier but finances). But she must be in heat & i quess she is not fixed so non-stop they are at it. I have tried separting them in & out of the house but both of them whine, bark, and scratch at the doors, and knock over the gates. Plus we have a terrible next door neighbor!! I know they have already gotten together but Im upset because If I knew I'd avoided this awhile back & I dont want puppies!. I called the vet & they cant get her in until Nov. 27th. Is there anything else I can do? Any home remedy? We cant sleep, I'm tired of seeing it and my male is a doberman and and female is a lab. I know I read 14-21 days in heat please tell me this wont go on that long...any advice would be greatly needed!

Most female dogs will stay in season for 4 wks.If your pets have bred and you don't want a litter of pups, then you need to see the vet,as there is an injection that will abort the litter, but two must be given two weeks apart. The cost where I live is $25.00 each injection, but the female must be at least two weeks in her season.Have her spayed when you do get the appointment.

I know that the animal shelter in my community will spay or neuter for a lot less then the vets in the area will. The problem with that is it's usually a few months before you can get in.

You never noticed your dog go into heat? You "guess" she's not spayed? Any vet could have told you when you got her whether or not she had been spayed.

Ignorance probably just won you a litter of puppies. Call your local animal shelter, explain the situation and ask them what can be done if she gets pregnant and if they will take the puppies. I don't know if the shelter will take care of puppy's first shots though so you may have some heavy vet bills in the near future. PLEASE do not neglect your dog or the pups if she does get pregnant. There are a ton of resources, do your homework and start looking for funding now.

Might have been worth it to scrounge up the money to get the male neutered huh?

Hind sight is always 20/20...

Even if you kept your female dog in a separate room, both of them would ruin the door scratching/pawing to get to each other. Only thiing I can suggest is to have someone you trust keep one of them at their house until the female's season ends.

Go ahead and schedule her (or the male) with the vet for November 27 to have her/him fixed. The vet will still spay her if her heat has not ended at that time.

Too bad....the deed is done. You couldn't afford or take the time to have the female examined, but you got another dog? And now he needs vet care to be neutered. And you probably don't have the disposible income for that? You are creating a problem. Dogs and cats cost money.....they don't just eat and poop. Get them to a vet....call around for the best price....get on a payment plan.

Try a differnent vet or contact your local shelter or SPCA because they have spay and neuter clinics. An 11 year old dog is way to old to have puppies. It could kill her! Please get her fixed as soon as you can and get your male dog neutered. PLEASE!

Thanks

at the risk of sounding like a *****, get rid of both dogs. it sounds as if you don't have the wherewithal to care for them properly.
after 11 yrs, if you were vetting the female properly, you would have known she wasn't fixed.

Do you have somewhere like your parents or a friend that can watch the male until she is done that would be my recomendation, i finally invested in a kennal but that is pricey and you need somthing now. that is what i would do ask a friend to watch him for a couple of weeks and she will go back to normal and forget and so will he.

I'm afraid there probably isn't much you can do but live with it. Do you have a relative nearby who can keep one of them for you until the surgery? You can try Bitches Britches for her - won't keep him from being interested, but they should prevent him from successfully mating.
