If you think they are pdfs, save them as a .pdf and see if you can open them. If not, open them in notebook. Sometimes you can figure out what they were created with by looking at the header.

.dat files are data files and not necessarily pdf files. Even video files can end with .dat

Assuming that this is happening in outlook express, configure the email address in outlook to see if the same is happening, or vice versa. If it is not, then the email client is at fault.

Another thing you could try is turning off the antivirus as it scans your email and might disable them thinking it to harmul. Norton is notorious for such actions.

If they are pdf files you will need Adobe Reader to open them. I'ts free from www.adobe.com.

Try saving them onto your desktop. Then open MS Word and open the file from Word itself. It should work.
