Here are some suggestions....just make sure that he continues to sit facing backwards until he is 1! These car seats work for infants and toddlers:

My daughter was getting big for her infant seat as well but she still fit and as a conveinence I kept her in it for as long as possible...she was always big on falling asleep in the car and this way I could just unsnap the seat and pop it onto a stroller or carry her into the house without having to wake her up. When she turned 1 we put her into the Britax Marathon seat and it's worked great!

You would need a convertible carseat with a 5 point harness system. I would hold off on getting one that converts into a booster later on down the road, solely for the reason that a lot of those seats do not work that great as a booster seat. (Although there are a few, but not many. I just bought the Recaro Young Sports for my 2, almost 3, year old twins. You can try the Cosco Apex as well. I heard that was decent)

If you just want a regular convertible until you need a booster, then I would suggest the Evenflo Triumphs. My girls are in these right now and they were wonderful seats. If they weren't outgrowing them, I would still be using them.

The britax seats are wonderful as well, but they are a bit pricey.

Your best bet would be to go with something like the Britax Decathlon. It can be used rear and forward facing and is also a convertible car seat. The Decathlon still accomodate an infant since it has an infant insert but later on you can remove that infant insert so that you can use it up to 65 lbs without the seat being too snug on your little one. The crotch strap is also adjustable which you can get really good use out of for when your child grows. You should check it out....

A convertible seat that can rear face and forward face with a five point harness. Keep him rear facing until he is AT LEAST 1 year old. You can get some convertible seat for under $100

ETA: Yes length DOES matter. Usually infant seat go up to 22lbs or 26inches but check your seat manual.

I highly recommend the convertible Britax seat, Roundabout or Marathon. They cost a pretty penny, but they are rated very well for safety and it's easy to install and use. I have both and I like the Marathon better, the weight max is 60lbs, whereas the Roundabout I think is 40lbs. Good luck!

It doesnt matter how long he is, it goes by weight. He's supposed to stay in a rear facing infant seat until he is atleast 22 pounds. From there you can get him a frnot face cnovertable seat :)

You can also contact the non-emergency number of your local police department, they are required to help you learn what car seats to use and when.

A convertible carseat is what you need. I really love our Britax Roundabout. If you have a bigger car, get the Britax Marathon. The Britax carseats are more expensive but very safe and comfy for our little ones.

I use the Safety first Alpha Omega Elite it is a little pricy but my son will never need another seat bacause it goes from rear facing to forward and then to a booster. I found it at Wal-mart.

Defintely go with a convertible car seat which can keep him facing backwards until he is at least one. If his legs start to hit the seat it will be okay. It is better for him to sit with his legs a tad bent than risk a neck/spine injury.

A convertible car seat. It's rear facing, forward facing, and can be turned into a booster seat. I have one and love it.
