My sister was in a wreck 9/06. She has 2 girls, 3 &4, i have guardianship of the 4 yr old but not 3 yr. The night of the wreck I picked the girls up - they have been with me since...she has seen them for 9 hours total...they are in a routine and seem to do well. both have emotional isssues but I am struggling with what to do.
My husband says we need to try to get custody? My heart is breaking for them. Any advice?

Give them as much love as possible and let them know everyday just how much they are loved and needed. If their mom coming around and it just hurts them dont let her see them and tell her you are looking out for her children's hearts, something she obviously isnt too worried about. They need to know its not their fault.

My first question to you would be why has she only seen them a total of 9 hours since the wreck? Is she debilitated and cannot see them or is she making the conscious decision to not see them. Secondly, what kind of a mother was she prior to the wreck? Is this just a continuation of poor parenting or is she having trouble recovering from the accident emotionally in addition to physically? I would recommend that you speak with a legal professional who has experience in these types of situations. They would have the best and most accurate advice for you. As a foster parent, I see what poor parenting can cause in children so I feel for you on this.
