Any Vi-tech or Fisher Price toy with flashing lights etc. There are some good deals at the moment with Christmas coming up (if you are in the UK try Woolworths or Tesco).
Most toys have a "Age" guide on them E.g. 2years+
And to tell you the truth...... they'll probabley play with the wrapping paper!

I have a two-year-old. At age 2, toddlers are starting to emulate social situations in their play. In this respect it is quite good to buy a toddler something that will help them act out what they see their parents doing. For example a kitchen set, a toy DIY set, a dolls house, action figures, etc. of course, you could just buy this year's must have item: Elmo TMX :)

Savings bonds are great...even if you only spend 25 on that and then a book. I would ask the parents if they need anything for him or her, such as clothes, shoes, winter coat, boots. There are so many toys made specifically for this age group. The toy stores even have them in their own seperate aisles now making it easier to shop for age specific gifts.

Buy the child some kind of blocks children love blocks. Some children books are also good for bedtime stories. It also depends on what the child likes to do.

Depends on the child and their interests. Boy or girl? Most toys have an age indicator. Just look for something that says for children of that age.

Any toy that "imitates" real life. Big favourites with 2-year olds are kitchens, sturdy/simple road tracks (like the one from ELC) and Playskool´s "little people" (sturdy, safe little plastic figurines, that fit in cars, playhouses etc.). These toys are popular with both boys and girls and keep them entertained for hours (days, weeks, months...) on end......
