You could keep a diary. Have a list of mood indicators, and grade yourself on scale of 0 to 5, 0 being terrible, and 5 being great. Things like, how happy do you feel, how purposeful, how sociable. The Feeling Good Handbook by Burns has loads of suggestions, I just can't remember them all off hand. Then after a month or so you can look back over your diary and see if you have been feeling better or not. If not, ask the doctor how long they are suppost to take to kick in, and whether you should try some different pills.

It is very difficult to prescribe the right level of antidepressants. Doctors usually start patients off on the lowest dose, and after three or four weeks if there is not noticible difference they up the dose and wait a few weeks again, etc etc till the right dose is reached.

It can be quiet sudden. You notice one lunchtime that you have had a great morning, and you realise the dark cloud might have actually started to lift. It is fantastic.

That's a good question. I too have asked the same thing, and the people around me have told me that they have seen the difference before I have felt the difference in me. After about 5 weeks I just began feeling more upbeat and more patient with things and not as hot tempered as I usually am. I was the type of person that was always down on everything.

Boring answer but: it depends upon the person and how soon they attain a therapeutic plasma level, commonly it is a coupe of weeks but some people take longer and some report improvement in a few days. It also depends upon the problem for which the meds have been prescribed (improvement in symptoms of OCD take longer) and what kind of meds you are taking. if this is concerning you a pharmacist is by far the best person to ask.

In my experience it is nothing for the first four days, then a small improvement for the next three. Then a moderate improvement for the next three. At this stage you feel better. But for the next two weeks after that you get better again and feel "fulfilled", and you go a little manic.

I was on a fairly fast acting SSRI antidepressant: Escitalopram.

Some meds take a little longer than others. Antidepressants for the most part take a couple of weeks - you will feel a gradual change in mood, and will feel ever so grateful you took your pdoc's advice to take them. They are not addictive. People sometimes resist, don't take advice and they are the sorry ones who will miss out on the enjoyment of their lives.

it takes about 3 weeks of taking the tablets for them to work, as it is a slow build up in your system, i was on antidepressants a few years ago and after about 3 weeks of taking them i just woke up one morning and just felt like a great weight had been lifted off my shoulders, and i just didn't feel like bursting into tears any more, stick with them and good luck

it takes a long long time, but one day (after you have found the right dosage for you), you will wake up and realise that you have only had 5 bad days this week instead of 7.

gradually you will realise that this week you only had 3 bad days and then eventyually you will notice the odd bad day, instead of noticing the odd good day

try rating yourself out of ten every day, then you can track how you are doing, dont be down if your mood goes down too though it will pick up again.

good luck and stick with it, you will get better

Mine took weeks to work. I went on them and waited 5 weeks but felt no different - still down and tearful o I went back and spoke to my GP who doubled the dose. Withn 2 weeks I found I was less down and I actually wanted to get up in the morning rather than forcing myself xx
