The concept of the death penalty is good. It is supposed to be a mental as well as a physical deterrent. Most statistics show that the people who are given the death penalty have killed more than one person, if they could have been stopped after the first time, how many people would that have saved. There is no way to measure deterence when something doesn't happen. The mental deterrence isn't there because the person sits on death row for decades. Punishment is supposed to be "sure and swift". Our death penalty is anything but "sure and swift", if it was it would definitely be a good thing, deterrence wise. Besides how can something that saves lives and gets rid of the people taking those lives be a bad thing?

I'm on the death penalty is bad side. I watched a program that featured that woman (can't remember her name: the female serial killer/prostitute they made a movie about called "monster"). This person was clearly/totally mentally ill. Mentally ill people are suffering from a medical condition and are not entirely criminally responsible for their actions. She should have been put away in a psychiatric facility for treatment. In Canada, there have been a least two cases in the last ten years where people convicted of murder have been found not guilty years later because of DNA technology.

It's good for the general population, so long as it has been absolutely proven that the condemned person is guilty. It's a warning to everybody to do right - - or else.
To the person on the receiving end, it could be good or bad, depending on his own belief. To some a lifetime in a cage is worse than death. Others will hold on to life no matter how undesireable that life might be. Even though they had no problem with taking someone else's life.

The death penalty has both good and bad aspects. I pity the poor jurors who have to pass it down for one thing; and it can happen to innocent victims. However, most individuals who are handed the death penalty have committed some horrible crime and DO deserve to die. The prison system uses them as examples to other members of society, which is bad and good I suppose. The criminals who are put to death also are no longer a tax burden and that is a GOOD thing!

When it costs the tax paying citizens to support and house a death row prisoner over $50,000 per year.......yes its a good idea.

Death penalty for violent crimes, crimes against children and repeat violent offenders.

We are one of the very few countries that don't make it mandatory. We allow unlimited appeals that abuse and exhaust resources needed elsewhere. With the availability of DNA and newer forensics mistakes are fewer. If you do the crime....do the time. If you take a life..be prepared to give yours.

Spend the money on education so we don't have more offenders in the future. That $50,000 could give books and other necessary supplies to at least 10 schools! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If we give our children what they need to succeed in life....they will be productive, law abiding citizens.

Knowledge is power, ignorance is inexcusable......

that depends. if you're an "eye for an eye" guy/gal....it's good. But then there's no room for mistakes. I think that in serious cases. child murder, serial killing. it should be left up to the family(ies) of the victim(s). I personally can't condone the taking of anybody's life by whoever. I think a civilised society doesn't resort to that kind of sanction Hobbes 27: does the family feel better?. in the immediate perhaps, but living with anyone's death on your conscience isn't easy, and it doesn't bring the victim back.

bad in my onpion.
All it does is justify killing, there is no purpose for it at all

1. It costs just as much to kill some one as it does to keep them in prision for the rest of their lives.
2. Its saying killing is okay as long as its for the right reason
3. There is the chance that the wrong person may be killed.
4. Who says we as humans have the right to decide who dies and who lives?
5. It doesnt solve anything, the criminal doesnt have to suffer and rot in prision, nope he gets a last meal, and a peaceful death.

Reasons why the death penalty is good.
Less people in prision
Family of victim feels better

The death penalty is rediculous and should be abolished.

Good. 50 cents for a bullet is lots cheaper than long term room and board, complete with health care and even entertainment.
It also ensures the perp isn't going to repeat his crime.
And if it were carried out regularly, it would even serve as a deterrent for copycat criminals.

Lots of killing is considered okay. Abortions are just fine with society. Soldiers are rewarded for killing. Why should criminals be treated better than an innocent child? And with modern DNA testing, no innocent person need ever be accidentally killed.

It depends. It's good if you want to get rid of someone. But if your intent is to punish someone, keeping them locked up in jail, being told when to eat, sleep, wake up, exercise, etc. every day of every week, of every month, of every year, year after year, till you die, seems worse to me. Not to mention all the nasty stuff your bound to experience.

Now, theologically, execution is murder. Who are we to decide who lives or who dies. Sounds easy until someone murders your sibling.

Lets watch what happens with Saddam. Is it going to be good or bad? It's playing out right now.
