I did a google search, and there are many people the quote is attributed to, including:

Henry David Thoreau
Horace Mann
Peter Marshall

and some just dsaid it was a famous "proverb"

any help is appreciated.

Considering when each of them lived, I'm inclined to attribute it to Horace Mann or Thoreau.
