The 'norm' will be different according to youir age group and ethnicity.

Specifically, your activities will determine what is the 'right' amount.

Under about 11 per cent is good for showing off your musculature or competing in endurance events (where extra weight will make you slower, and extra insulation will make you overheat).

However, 11 per cent is also an important limit for all sorts of physiological dangers.

For example, bones are usually weakened by the methods of achieving such a low percentage (for both sexes). In women, the menstrual cycle will usually stop when bodyfat is below 11 %; it is unclear how much effect this will have on later fertility.

Material from the ACSM (www.acsm.org) will tell you more about bodyfat measurement, which is normally unrelated to BMI

(BMI compares weight and height, like height/weight tables do, and cannot account for body composition.)

Depends on the sex, look up "BMI" to calculate yours and most calculators will have a good range for you to be in.
