I am getting my hair done in a NICE salon, it is going to be about $80.00 to get a color and cut. I usually go to (Fiesta, Great Clips, Fantastics Sam's) that type of place and I tip a few bucks. I am for the first time getting my hair done in higher end salon, I am wondering what the average tip would be or should be. I don't want to be a cheepskate and I also do not want to spend a ton of $$$.

I see a lot of folks saying that it is just like waiting tables......I know that their tips are part of their pay (they get paid a different minimun wage then others do) when I waited tables I was paid about $2.30 per hour + tips. Is this true for hair stylists? Do they get paid in the same manner as waitress/waiter does? Or do you just give them more $$ because you liked their service or are you 'required' to tip? I am going to leave a tip, I just want to understand it better.

10 to 20% and the shampoo person usually gets tip as well. When I am unsure I will call the salon and ask about the tipping, who gets tips and what is the percentage. Of course you do need to take into consideration on who may be answering your question. The best compliment will be your repeat business to the same hairdresser, so you are right to remember to tip them.
Peace.

Years ago the feeling was so much per type of svc.
All salon Svcs should be like tipping a waitress.
For poor svc you're not happy with: tell her why you're not happy and tip only 10%
For ave. Svc that's just okay: Tip 15%
For really good Svc, extra touches and if you just love what they did: tip 20%.
These rules apply no matter where you go (High end or low). Think about it. If you took time and really put your best efforts and attention to detail would you do it again if someone noticed and gave you a nice tip?
But if you do all that and are tipped poorly or apathetically eventually you would say 'why bother'. If people act like they are happy with average svc and cookie-cutter treatment what incentive do Svc oriented workers have to ever improve or stay current. We need to make it clear how we feel about their work ethic. Try googling your Queston.

15-20% just like you would tip a waitress! thats the average tip for anything weather you tip a dj at a wedding or order a pizza tipping is always 15-20%im in the tipping business and i do go out of my way and give extra special attention to my clients that tip the 20% and sometimes give them free stuff.

Hey
Usually it's between 5-10 % of the value of the cut.... personally I'd give 10% of the value i.e. my last haitcut cost £30 (about $50) so I tipped £3! I would definately not pay any more... you're paying enough for the service itself! And you can be guaranteed that they gain a bigger profit margin per cut than your average joe bloggs salon because of their reputation! They're earning enough!!!
Hope it's nice!!!
Good Luck!

I think you decide that after it is done & if you like the cut,the color you chose on your own. When I found my stylist I tipped more the first time, because I liked her & the job she did, so as to maybe she would have time for me when I call back for my next appointment. I just had what you are haveing done and it was$65. & I gave her 15%.

I think $5 wouldn't be enough, $10 would be closer. I would give an employee more than I would give the owner.

if you're satisfied the way your hair is done 10% would be nice tip, if you're extra satisfied you can give them more, like 15%, maybe 20%, but no more than that.

I had hi-lites down in my salon and I have been going to the same hairdresser for years. I left her 7.00. The hi-lites cost me 70.00 which a percentage of that is hers. I felt 7.00 is more than enough. Give what you feel comfortable with.
