I'm a guy that is a firm believer that women shouldn't color their hair. Concentrate on style.

I dye my hair frequently. I've been going gray since I was 16. So I'm pretty much a pro when it comes to dying hair at home. I'm very good at not getting it on my skin now since I've done it so long but I wasn't always neat. I use to make one heck of a mess. :) I should also add that my hair is dark brown. That tends to stain the most but I've learned that if you get it on your skin... Especially your ears, forehead, and neck... just take a paper towel (a strong one) get it wet and rub it on a bar of soap or squirt it with soap and wipe off the dye right after you're finished applying it. Ever since I've done that little step I've not had any problems with dye staining my skin. Good luck! Also, remember to always start at the top and work your way around. Pile your hair on top of your head so that it won't fall and make more of a mess for you to worry about.

VASELINE! Although it seems to be the wrong answer for this question.

First of all, you don't goop it on your skin, you apply it like you would lotion. Infact, you can even use lotion if you want. Basically any kind of grease is going to repell the color because if you have leave in conditioner, gel, mouse, hairspray, vaseline in your hair, the color is not going to stick to that part of the hair because there is already something sealing up the hair shaft and the color cannot get in.

And thanks for the thumbs down. I hope your skin bubbles up from the hair dye and your hair falls out. GO TO ANY SALON AND THEY WILL TELL YOU WHAT I TOLD YOU ABOUT WHAT TO APPLY!! I KNOW BECAUSE I USED TO WORK IN ONE AND MY MOTHER-IN-LAW OWNS HER HAIR SALON! I THINK I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!

cover the skin around your ears and hairline with hand cream before applying color. this will not let the dye set on your skin and will wipe off very easily.

My mother used vasoline. Worked, but may be too messy for you. Olive oil sounds better to me.
