Before Internet chit-chat LOL stood for Little Old Ladies. The abbreviation now meaning laughing out loud can be an ice-breaker to let a recipient know there is no intended malice or hard thought coming their way.

lol = "lots of laughs" or" laugh out loud"
......it is computer slang used to indicate when the writer has found something amusing or when the writer wishes to convey that he/she is joking.
so it isn't dumb, just a modern form of computer short hand. There are many other computer slang abbreviations which are also used.
