I quit smoking 80 days ago and I have gained about 5 pounds or so. Yes, you will gain some weight, but compared with the health advantages of quitting, gaining a little weight is nothing and can be controlled by running for example. The important thing is to quit. I smoked 1 pack a day for 30 years and quit cold turkey. A few things helped before I quit, I started trying not to smoke in the car in my way to work, I was also noting the time I lighted up, the next cigarette had to beat the previous time. For example 1 hour, then 2, then 3 hours without smoking. Also I met a 92 year old man that told me he had never smoked, I was also starting to feel short of breath.

The weight gain upon quitting smoking comes from eating more - because food tastes better. If you can stick to portion control, you can easily beat the weight gain. The effect of smoking to increase metabolism is small.
Drinking a lot of water is what I recommend. If you work a desk job make sure you have a big bootle of water near you all the time. Healthy snacking (like fruit) is also recommended so you won't eat too much during the regualr meal times

That's up to you. If you adopt a healthy diet and exercise routine, you will most likely lose weight instead of gaining. I gained ten pounds in a month after quitting. Now that I'm on a healthy diet and exercise plan, I'm back down to less than when I was smoking. Here's a helpful link on the psychology behind eating for pleasure:

You're not expected to gain weight just by giving up smoking. Some people who give up smoking grab something to eat instead of smoking - if that's you stop it and distract your urge for a *** by doing something that will occupy your mind. Sounds daft, but get a ready made cross stitch kit from that hobbies shop and take your mind off the fags and food. . . and exercise - search on the web for exercises at home that don't cost anything - or just dance yourself silly in the front room ready for when you brave man comes home.

I gained a hefty 12 pounds!! Had to really get my mind to it to start losing weight again.... But even the weight I gained was worth my while. I'm so glad I quit smoking.
Congrats & good luck!!

Depends on your personal phisiology and how you quit. Trying chewing gum instead of eating candy. Drink LOTS of Water...this helps get the nicotine out of your system (thus numbing craving faster). Take baths. and use your new found exercise to walk more, take stairs, and pick an aerobig workout tape for 20 minutes twice a week. You probably won't gain weight and you be more physically fit. It worked for me. Good luck!

You will only gain as much as the extra calories you consume. Smoking reduces appetite, so if you replace cigarette with say a sports bottle of water, you will both flush out toxins from your system faster and reduce craving, but also get the mouth fix you need so not tempted to return to it. This is what the QUIT courses in Aust advise.

most gain from ten to twenty pounds. The good news is that after about a year, than weight will go away. It's simply the body adjusting to the lack of toxins and addictives.

i know its bad but this is what i did and i feel better than i ever did in my 21 years!!
I replaced my cigarette habit, and instead, smoked half a Spliff morning and night!
I don not need to smoke any tobacco at all now, apart from literally one cigarette a day which i put in with it
I dont recommend this to anti drugs people though!
