If someone answered in a 'knoweledgable' manner that the proper dose for a dog that size would be 2 capsules every 2 hours....would you do it???

Or what if they instead suggested something else?

Why are you asking for medical advice in a forum of anonymous people, where you can't verify anyone's medical training or credentials? You also have no recourse if something bad happens to your dog as a result of that advice.

Just about every day, I have to *fix* a problem CAUSED by a pet owner following the advice of something they read on the Internet. Please don't do that to your dog. (Some of those problems can't be fixed, btw.)

Your DVM is the only person who can tell you the dose for YOUR dog. Even *I* can't. I can post the basic canine dose for that drug, which IS very safe....but I don't know your dog's health status. It can occasionally cause harm.

Please call your dog's doctor for any medical recommendations you need for him.

Thanks! <---(That's on behalf of your dog.)

ETA: I just took a look at this website, posted by another answerer: http://www.filarescue.org/medicines.shtml
It's frightening how much downright wrong information it contains in places, as well as incomplete information in others...which is every bit as dangerous. :-/

Has your dog been diagnosed by a vet with allergies? If yes, then he should have talked medications over with you.

Do not self diagnose or self medicate unless you are sure of what the problem is. Call your vet for an appointment and let him tell you what meds. If it's benadryl, then he'll give you the right prescription.

I give my dog Benedryl quite often, but as a sedative. And I only give him the Children's Formula, dye free, clear liquid.

There is a formula that you need to follow based on the dogs weight and the amount of medicine in the particular Benedryl that you use.

Call your vet and ask them what the right dosage would be. They might be able to give you some guidance about long term use. I have to agree with poster above that says it will make your dog drowsy and lethargic, so it is not a long-term solution. I would not give it more than once a day, and not every day.

You can give a dog Benadryl, but if it's for allergies you are going to need to give him something that is intended for longer term use. Benadryl is going to make him sleepy and eventually it will not be effective at treating his allergy symptoms (it will stop working). You really do need a vet for this.

Call your vet!! They will tell you if it is ok and how much! I give my dog benadryl before I take him to the vet to get his shots because he had a reaction after his first shots as a puppy. However, this is really the only time I have ever given them to him, and I always call the vet first to find out how much and double check that it is ok. If your dog needs allergy medicene on a permanent basis it is much, much, much better to get an actual animal dog allergy medicene prescribed!

So again, call your vet!!!

Yes you can and I have done so under vet supervision. It was a rescue dog and she was having problems about 20 min. before the vet was due to close. I live 3/4 of an hour from the vet.
Here's a site with the dosage by weight

i would give him about 1/4 of a pill, but I never gave benadryl to a dog that small, so i would ask your vet. my dogs get benadryl if they have an allergy, the pill and cream ARE safe.

Call your vet. There is more than one kind of benadryl, plus most benadryl is dosed for adult humans who weigh several times what your dogs weighs.

Call a vet to find out. I've heard some people do give their pets their medicine. Just make sure it's not too powerful. It also depends on the weight.
