My MS Word has started to run incredibly slow (typing, scrolling, everything) in the last few days. It happens even when there are no other windows open and no programmes running. It seems that this is affecting Word only, as internet explorer etc are ok for now. Checked the taskbar and the only actual programe running in the bacground is my ADSL. I have Windows XP and my virtual memory is 288mb.

Could this be connected to the fact that I have 1GB of music on my laptop as well as a large quantity of photographs? (a big no no, I imagine). Other than that, I don't have any fancy programmes and have recently un-installed Skype and Norton (as they were slowing down my laptop) and it sped up since, only to have Word playing up now.
Thanks everyone.

No, I don't believe that it has anything to do with the amount of music on your laptop, UNLESS you're running out of disk space on your C: drive. Il you have less than 100 Mb free, then clean up your drive.

To diagnose the problem, open your task manager while Word is running (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC keys) and under the Processes tab, look which process is taking all the CPU.

My guess is that your anti-virus might be responsible for this. I've seen wierd thing where it scans forever some bizarre files. Disable it or remove it for a while and try again.

Also, try to install service packs for Office. Look at the link below.

Good luck!

1) Do you have Norton Antivirus installed ? If yes then while starting it will scan a file and then only let you open it.
2) Another reason could be Virtual memory ! Try increasing it.
3) Does you Hard disk is running low on space, if yes then try removing some unwanted clutter
4) If Hard disk is cluttered, get some software to clean it.
You can try "System Mechanic" from www.iolo.com
It is one of best software i have even encountered. But use with care !

Happy to discuss :-)
