I've done this...they are for about a day or two but when they realize that they get more attention from you they get over it and like being #1.

First my training in psychology says that dogs and some other animals have and express emotions much like humans do.
If two dogs are bonded emotionally, one may certainly grieve if the other dies or is carried away.
On a farm, my aunt talked of a mother cow who cried for her stolen calf. A mate has had to be away from home (Lives with cousin, his wife and two other roommates) for a month, leaving his kitty. That poor cat will, in spite of attention from others, sit on my lap as many minutes or hours as one of my visits may be.
To say animals do not feel or miss someone they are attached to, including another animal is to insult their character, and their very beings.
Having said this, I do believe that animals do not necessarily always grieve as long as do humans. As an example, they understand death--My mum died at home. I let Abbey climb up on the bed, and walk up mother's chest. She sniffed mum's nose and then got down. She was verifying mum had past.
BTW, Mum would have wanted Abbey to have this last goodbye. It was not at all disrespectful, an old friend saying goodbye, in a very honest, heart to heart, interspecies manner.
Ih some pet adoption agencies, if two animals have been together, they always try to place both. Dogs especially are pack animals. If they must adopt new humans, the least we can do is preserve the animal bonds.
If split up, they will probably adjust, but I think it best not to split a pair unless is is an absolute necessity.
"Animals have rights, too!"
Naw, I do not belong to PETA, I simply care about our friends who happen to be of different species.

Part of the dogs' sense of security will be based on the presence of the other dog. I would expect some behaviour problems to arise in dogs that were separated and moved to a new home at the same time. This is a big change and the dogs will be distressed.

Yes dogs have emotions just like we do. When they r first born they bond with mother, brothers, sisters because that's who they first meet at birth so that dog or puppy become attached so when separated they become sad and even depressed. its just like a new job.......when u first get there u may seem a little attached but eventually with time u will fall right in like an old pro. Giving the right amount of love and affection and attention they will soon perk up and the sadness will disappear

Dogs (and canines in general) are seperated in the wild only by death. Packs stay together through thick and thin. Depending on how long they are together depends on how they grieve over the loss. I know that when one of my pack of five passed suddenly at the age of 9, the rest could sense something was wrong and slept closer to me and whined more for attention. Dogs, however, do not have emotion as we know it although they do have senses that we lack. We are only beinnign to understand how complex God has made them too!

We have 2...a Chow/Lab mix (female) and a Doberman (male)... the Chow escapes by climbing the fence, and the Doberman is upset until she gets back. When she comes back, he is so happy. While she is gone, he is so sad...

I think he misses her when she is gone.

When we go away for Christmas and bring the Lab with us (my boyfriend's dog, so of course, the Doberman comes with us). When we get back, you'd swear that they were long lost lovers or hadn't seen each other for years.

Yes, when one of my pups goes to a new home, the mother and littermates are very sad for a few days and I am sure the other pups is feeling the same way. I have seen the mother with huge tears in her eyes when she sees a pup leaving. Same with adult dogs. If one dies, they will grueve for the lost pet.

Sure, just like we would be. Our Breeder suggest that when you split up any dog/puppies you take a towel /old t-shirt and rub it all over the dog that will be missed and let your dog that is leaving sleep with it or carry it around for awhile

Yes, it happened to my dogs when my ex husband took one of them and I took the other after divorce. My dog behaved like he was sad and depressed,( I know, dogs do not have human emotions, but he appeared sad) so I adopted another one and he is a lot better now.

It depends on the dogs and what sort of relationship they had, but it is quite common for a pair of dogs to miss each other.

do you mean when people separate? It is the saddest thing and you can't explain to them which only makes it worse. If you mean when they are 8 week old pups and do they miss each other, then yes, they do - but like babies, quickly forget if you are kind to them
