if you are already quite fit, you may well profit from from running fairly fast, although these things are relative. Rapid running is definitely aerobic, requiring the use of additional oxygen, which is good for your heart and lungs and indeed the entire body. My own preference is for relatively easy running, since research has established that brisk walking, which is fairly close to easy running, is very good for you, provided it is done on a daily basis. Hard running can put too much pressure on the bones and joints. The man who popularized jogging 25 or so hours ago overdid it and dropped dead of a heart attack while out running. Regular walking or easy running, combined with a balanced and nutritious diet, will promote the development of new or collateral branches of the coronary arteries, thus easing the pressure on them, almost as though when traffic was heavy, alternate routes came into being to ease the congestion. You could try both easy and fast running alternately for a week or two, and see which makes you feel healthier.

You need to get your heartrate up, try running at an easy pace for few minutes, then speed up, then slow down again and keep alternating.

do waht first answer says - start slow then speed up - do short bursts of sprinting - 10-20 seconds only as well. its a more effective workout.
